I would like to bring to the attention to all of the Faerun lovers light myself that Ive heard truly devastating but hopefully not true news. First off, Black isle studios is gone. Out of the scene. ---IWD, BG games, O GOD--. ALso, I heard that bioware will stop with the FR scene, WHICH MAKES ME SO FREAGIN MAD AND SAD. Bioware Made the greatest RPG games, which guess what, WErE BASES IN FAERUN. Baldurs gate series and the acclaimed, my fav, neverwinter games. They said they want their own idea, but to me, the greatest joy of Forgotten Realms was that everything built upon each other. It was one big realm for Roleplayers fantasy come true. The whole single land idea brought a sense of unity and realism. I live in faerun half the time, well my mind wonders there, and To see BIoware take FR games down, would be truly devastating. If anyone gets the seriousness of this mssge, just reply with your thoughts and comments. I know I couldnt stand it to see bioware, teh greatest FR game maker ditch Faerun. It would truly be a heartblow and I CANT STAND ITTTTTTTTTTT. Please reply with your thoughts, fellow FR lovers. -Kaervok- Aluve

Though I mourn the shift in BioWare's goals, and grieve the loss of Black Isle Studios (we hardly knew ye), it is not like BioWare did not want to make another Baldur's Gate style game, they just could not, and still cannot. The never-ending joys of, you guessed it, Licensing!
You see, the death of Baldur's Gate originates from the post Baldur's Gate II schism between Interplay and BioWare. When they split, the publisher, Interplay, took with it the rights to publish under the Baldur's Gate trademark. Also, blame Atari, for they hold the right to publish under the Forgotten Realms trademark (Interplay had to buy rights to publish Dark Alliance under the FR logo from Atari, and in return surrendered any rights to publish FR on PCs). The whole situation is one big mess.
Of course, I also cannot blame BioWare for deciding to create and develop their own worlds, no matter how I love Faerun. I always got the impression BioWare began developing Forgotten Realms games because they did not need to spend time developing their own world, which can be expensive. They were a fledgling comapny when they began with Baldur's Gate, and now they have a place of power in the industry and a loyal fan base, cemented by the sucess of Baldur's Gate II and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
In the end, while sad, if companies did not develop their own worlds, we would not have WarCraft and Doom and Quake and Ages of Empires and SWAT and all those other great games we all love. So, while I mourn, I also rejoice, for something new, and likely good, will come out of it. Or they'll make House Party II for PC. |

Just a note on how dedicated the people at Bioware is when making games I might add that it took about 5 years to complete Neverwinter Nights. This is quite some time in the gaming industry. I truly hope that this isn’t the end, but only a short brake perhaps while they look for other venues. |

EXACTLY HYMN, You have said what I had hoped and thought. Why shouldnt they take a break, you know, after making three FR games in a row. I dont like the whole mess about liscenses and stuff. I have high hopes for Bioware, I really liked them because they took and replied to input from their fans. Unlike blizzard and other comps. who dont even bother to talk, Bioware was with us all the way, almost at least. THe people who make the BG Ps2 games, I hope they learn the ways of true RPGs. ALso, like ezindir, I kinda dont wanna be stuck playing the same games just to get to FR, but I do love the mod creation with NWN. When I get the exp's, im going to recreate IWD with the winter tileset, and recreate Scenes from one of my favorite authors, Salvator!!!, books. Like MIthral hall and Calimshan. It will be great. Also, many will think Im crazy, but, I have high hopes for FR virtual reality. IM not talking about the old stuff, im talking about like dot.hacked semi matrix thing where you log into the game and you see it from your eyes view. This is not fantasy people, Ive talked to some scientist and neurologist, and thinking of being one myself when older, and they were also into sci-fi. Well, we started talking about the matrix and I brought up the thought of real virtual reality. I thought they would think, lol, only in the books, but they said, well, I expect it in the next 10 years. I got real excited because I thgouht of the possibilites of making FR into virtualy reality, kinda like dot.hacked or what ever. I dont wanna explain how the brain works here, but I have high hopes for the future, but I just cant stand to see bioware leave FR. We wil ALL See, for the better I hope and believe, To you all my fellow FR FANS, BLESSED BEEEEEEEEEEEE Kaervok |

Hmmm. Very sad to hear that. Well, at least NWN has the toolset and the mod community out there. Those things alone will make sure NWN is a game that will live for a looong time to come. At least on my PC. |

I definitly Agree. Although I think and so many others at Bioware, that this may just be a prolonged break. They are giving some time to settle problems down with WotC. ALthough this is a sad and blaphemous, at least we have the Toolset. I love it, the creations are almost limitless. But like I said, im still keeping the Virtual Reality in mind. Its true, and I have high hopes. Maybe thats what Ill do when I Grow up, help creat Faerun Virtual reality. It will be great, and after a lot of talks, im not to saddened. I wish Bioware the best, and hope they will realize the mistake of not making another game along the lines of a *very* successful FR merchandise line. *kaervok* |

Oh nooo! Now what am I going to do with my spare time? (Don't answer that) I really enjoy playing Bioware's RPGs. It's just so sad. Say Kaervok, just how reliable is this informant of yours? |

Lol, I dont want to beleive it, and it still might not be true. But, I know that for the next few years, bioware is working on their own stuff. In a while, when I find it, i will put a link to my topic discussion at bioware.com. Itll have all the details, but I hope they will come back in a few years and make NWN2 or sumthing. JUst look for those discussions on the Biowares forum, and until later, ill be back and post a link. Kaervok |

Tis sad news, but at the end of the day, Bioware's FR computer games are only a recent addition to the great Realms universe and the actual RPG products are what make the setting! The computer games merely (thats probably the wrong word, I dont mean it disrespectful in any way) introduced a new breed of fans.
Theres MUCH MUCH more to the Realms than what is played on a computer. |

Yes, I do agree. There are the books and stuff, and the RPG true stuff. BUt the best part of the COMP games was that it brought it to a new kind of life, one that was visual and helped non imaginary people see the World of Faerun how it is. Thats why I really loved the Bioware games. I still hope they dont forget FR though. Kaervok |

First time poster, long time player: What exactly is there to worry about? The Neverwinter Nights game system is designed to be ever expanded from this point on by you and I. I can see being sad at the passing of one of the greatest game producers on the market. There is no denying the cruelty of the situation, but Faerun is alive and well online with multiple worlds being hooked together every day. As long as there are ingenuitive module builders out there, there will be an infinite amount of exploration to do. All built off of that engine you know and love. (at least I do.)
So anyway.. just saying hi and droping in 2 cents. :) |

For some (such as myself) This is a tragedy for several reasons. First I am HORRIBLE when I attempt to create a level or module for anything (I almost got the hang of the Starcraft world/campaign editor when everything changed and Starcraft was out... Sad I know for it was such a simple editor). On the whole I can't create what I wish and well modules I desire are more RP than H&S. Mores the pity for me... Oh well... |

I am in the same boat as you when it comes to creating mods with the toolset, Mr. Deimos. To do it right takes way too much time and you really need to be a novice programmer at the very least to do anything worthwhile anyway. I agree that the majority of the mods out there are the hack n slash variety, but there are those that have the RP component in them. You just have to find them. The Neverwinter Vault has some great mods that are RP based. You could also give A Land Far Away a try as well. these guys are ALL about role playing with the combat being secondary.
Granted, this game will never be the same as when we sit at a table and game for real, but it's the next best thing. |

There's a place called "Arlea" as well, which is very into the role playing aspect of this game. My own designs are leaning towards a game in which if one chooses a hack-n-slash game, they will end up dying very quickly, and without a way to return their character to life.
I do know that it's not easy to build modules. At the same time, it is no harder than learning Actionscript, which is a very easy language to learn. In addition, by "you and I" I mean the playing community as a whole. There are lots of very intelligent people out there building modules. Now the GM aspect of the Neverwinter Nights game is very much more simple to learn than the building tools. That you should definitely look into if you enjoy DM'ing games. If you can get three or four of your table top players to get the game, you can have endless fun with the modules that are already online, just by choosing to have a DM for the mods instead of playing them single player.
so anyway.. it is my hope that I will be able to help people here enough with the tools that they become interested in the subject, choose to spend some time, and in the process help me out. If I'm the only one here building mods for the game, at least I have access to this forum's intelligent sources of game material. Like I said in my other post, that's where I'm weakest in this process.
I hope that we as mod builders will be able to keep the game going without bioware in the picture, and that people who just want to play the games will have an endless supply. |

Well there are scripts which will allow one to have more than one henchmen. I'll certainly be attempting to do that in my own games. Truthfuly though, it sounds like you are into playing these games alone. I'm not really interested in such endevors. My goal is to have a world online for people to join and play together. In that vein, one can have quite a large party develope, or players can move around independently of the party, allowing more realism for theives, sorcerers, and wizards who tend to have to do a lot of personal training in life. |

Well..refresh my memory, It's been a while since I did either the old Pool or Radiance or even BG. How did they have the players set up? Was it based on designing 6 characters and playing them all? The new henchmen from HotU allow you to have full access to their inventories, you can set a variety of combat and non combat default actions for them. They cast spells, they heal party members, etc. I'm not sure what more than that, people are looking for. I certainly would like my own NPC party members to be as enjoyable as possible to play with. The more feedback I get, the more I can work towards that.
I guess I'm saying.. fill me in man. Tell me what it is that was so great about the NPC's in the past and I'll try to accomplish that. |

In BG, you made one character and had NPCs join you along the way. I believe Ezindir was referring to the level of control you had over those characters, equal to what you had over your own in terms of game choices. The NPCs still had their own personalities, but you could take their game abilities wherever you wanted. |

Well Baldurs gate was great, and you could make all your characters there to, but Arivia is rigth it was the control I was refering to. As for NWN you have no control over your henchman, and things like your charchters apperance,(mages looked realy stupid, but I think that IWD and the BG series had more strategy in it and NWN is more about skills with how to swing the sword and stoff. But some thing where great in NWN to, like the familiar you can get, it was good and looked cool. But I still liked the old games better. |
