Does any one else ever have trouble keeping a stories straight if the city and character names are hard to pronounce? like if there are too many consonants and not enough vowels. Its like if I can't say them in my head I can't keep the story straight.

Examples: Umdsam,Dyngar,Ingddyn my examples leave a bit to be desired.

Anyone else experience this? or am I all by my lonesome...

As a longtime fan of fantasy writing, i have seen plenty of strange names. The key is to just sound it out clearly the first time you see it and it should be easier and easier to say. All of the examples you listed LOOK weird but are not actually difficult to pronounce.

Some people have a way with words, and other people...oh, uh, not have way. -Steve Martin

Having a few hard to pronounce names is OK, especially if a pronunciation guide is included in a glossary, but having too many of them takes away from the story, making it harder to read.

Rai-guy from Bob Salvatore's novels was the oddest name I think I came across. It didn't seem to fit in with the fantasy names like Jarlaxle, Drizzt, Kimmuriel and Bruenor.

Usually difficult pronounced names does not bother me as much as when two characters in the same books has names that sound/look almost the same.

I don't like the name Heliogabalus.

Names with similar syllables really bug me, like Mari Al-Marien and Caledan Caldorian.

But Heliogabalus is a name with fine historic pedigree! My wiki link neglects to mention the frequent occurrence of this unwieldy polysyllabic name in Gilbert & Sullivan lyrics.

I do agree it does seem somewhat out of place in the Realms; I have difficulty imagining dwarves ever using a Latin tongue. I am mildly irritated whenever I read a D&D name formed from cool-sounding bad Dog Latin - although fortunately this has never been a strong tendency in the Realms, certainly not as much as in Dragonlance.

Never noticed that before...

Waterdeep does have a Slut Street, but Ed has clarified that the word does not have the same meaning in the Realms that we have for it.

It's actually Elversult, though that's not necessarily much better. That just makes all the hard coin lads and lasses fey.

There is also a Slut Street in Dock Ward of Waterdeep, as the 2e City of Splendors confirms.

THOSE kind of shops.

Apropriately enough, a long time ago, at the request of one of the gamers in my group, I queried Ed regarding "toys" in the Realms, and the sheer volume of Realmslore I received in response was enough to stun my player into shocked silence for a while. (This being a player who was VERY interested in the concept in the first place.) +1 for Ed.

Cheers

lol, i just find it funny that Slut Street was used as opposed to something more "Fantastical" sounding...perhaps Harem's Way, or Brothel Ave.?

When I read Sojourn for this first time, I remember looking at the map and thinking, "Wow, lots of towns with an -ar suffix. As far as Rai-Guy goes, it does sound offputting if you're referring to a drow. I preferred Rai'gy, which was the spelling in The Silent Blade, if I remember correctly.

Not exactly what you'd expect, for the most part. There's brief mentions of what you can find in most Waterdeep-related sources.

If you recall, I've got a pending query with Ed on exactly that subject.

It's worth noting that while the context and meaning of the word may not be exactly the same, that doesn't also mean that such locales won't be found on this street. Just that the street name and the locales one should find there, aren't directly related -- at least in terms of the Realms.
