A similar post has probably been done in the past but: What is your favorite Forgotten Realms book cover of all time? (old cover art and new). A tough decision to be sure, but for me it is probably either the original Shadowdale, or the original Darkwell. When i look at both they remind me of great stories, but they also just remind me of some good old fashioned roleplaying. :)
On the flip side: What is your least favorite cover of all time? This one for me is much harder to answer because much of the new cover art doesn't appeal to me. I prefer the older classic cover styles. Many of the new covers seem too flashy and busy for me.

*original* The Twilight Giants trilogy
*original* Daughter Of The Drow

There's a reason these books had new covers made, imo. |

My favorite so far, as I mentioned in the thread I started, is The Captive Flame. Great details and captivating colors.
What I dislike the most is the original cover art of Daughter of the Drow, which I happen to have. [The cover alone nearly prompted me to buy the reprinted version] |

I am with you 100% on the Legacy of the Drow series covers. I can't remember which, but either Daughter of the Drow or Tangled Webs made Liriel look way too chubby. |

| The 2 newest Elminster books have fantastic covers. The War of the Spider Queen series also were all top notch. I really like the cover to Gauntlgrym, The Thousand Orcs, and The Lone Drow as well. |

Favourite is too hard, but the Pool of Radiance and Azure Bonds covers both evoke nostalgic introduction to the realms feelings for me, so they are right up there. Also the covers of the Avatar Trilogy (I mean the Clyde Caldwell originals, the reprints are so lifeless and awful with their single god on purple/black...ugh).

lol @ Erik, you're such a shameless opportunist, awesome, I love it.
They say you can't judge a book by its cover anyhow. Of course I'm constantly guilty of judging books by the little text blurbs, and though I generally don't much care for the artwork my eye still gets lured by images of swords and liches and seductive females. Conversely, my eye tends to skip past shoddy artwork and dull text legends, only coming back when directed away from the flashy stuff. More costly-looking cover art does typically promise higher overall production value, whether I happen to like the art or not.
None of these pictures of drow women arouse me, blue chicks just don't interest me nearly as much as real chicks. This was my favourite piece of D&D art for a long time, for obvious reasons. |

That was the cover of a Gold Box game, Dennis...therefore it is untouchable and must be praised :)

Fred Fields, the artist who painted the first edition cover of Daughter of the Drow, did a self-portrait for Fyodor and painted his significant other for Liriel, complete with the feathered, post-Farrah hair style. Oy gevalt.
Even worse, imo, was the original cover of Tangled Webs, which depicted Liriel facing off against an illithid. The illithid, btw, had distinctly mammalian tendencies, which prompted one reader to observe, "Holy crap! The squid is stacked!" Another reader described the cover as "a freeze-frame from a bad dance video." Yet another followed with a filk version of the BeeGees song "Flayin' Alive." ("Brain is fire, she needs an underwire but she's flayin' alive, flayin' alive....")
Good times on AOL's TSR forum.

I won't deny that, though in this case I will say that I really sincerely love those covers I linked. I cannot explain how pleased I was to see Ghostwalker's cover for the first time--how well it captured the essence of my character.

I love the original covers of the Icewind Dale trilogy and the Avatar trilogy, and the covers of the Finder's Stone trilogy. These were the first Realms novels I've read and they have a special place in my heart.

I've always liked the original cover of "Spellfire." I always enjoyed the older covers as well. Looking at some of the newer artwork, things look much darker in comparison. I will admit though, I haven't seen a whole lot of the newer artwork.
Also enjoy the original "Elfshadow" cover--Danilo and Arilyn really jump out at you in a "Taste my Moonblade" sort of way.
Least favorite would probably be "Stormlight." That cover just never looked good to me. |
