Great news concerning a fellow scribe and friend to all here at the 'keep.

Our own Brian Cortijo, aka Garen Thal, is on the roster of authors for a new anthology, When The Hero Comes Home, edited by Ed Greenwood and Gabrielle Harbowy.

Is is set to contain One and Twenty Summers by Brian Cortijo. Which will be his first published work of fiction!

Along with friend Brian, the authors also include, Ed, Rosemary Jones and Erik Scott de Bie. So many reasons to support this work!!

Brian, Ed, Rosemary, and Erik!?!

I think this is one of the rare moments where I'm actually left flabbergasted by a new work.

Yep, four of 19 stories are written by we four, and Ed was co-editor, which means there's at least a 25% chance of Realms flavor sneaking into this multigenre book.

Of course, none of that would be at all intentional.

Indeed, he did not!

21% of the book is written by Realms folks. I don't know what percentage Ed edited, but it accounts for at least 4% of the total work on the book, to be certain. So I got 25%, give or take a bit of 'this isn't actually about math.'

And did mine eyes deceive?! Todd MCCafferey?! Woot! Another reason to get this book, as I just finished reading his latest Pern novel. He truly is as gifted as his mother, and the title of his tale already has me intrigued.

There is some CRAZY talent in this anthology (seriously, Jim Hines, anyone?), and I for one highly look forward to seeing it in print.

I believe it should be available at GenCon, and you'd have the opportunity to get at least three of those signatures.

(I'm still trying to convince Rosemary to go one of these years. wink wink!)

Cheers

The titles of the stories sound interesting [except that very long one]. But I'll reserve my final decision whether to buy this or not till I hear some more details.

Hi, all.
Dennis, I talked to Ed late, late Saturday night at Ad Astra (Gabrielle, exhausted from jet lag and the launch party for JM Frey's first novel, Triptych, had already hit the sack), and I can tell you this much:
All sorts of genres and lengths are represented in this anthology, from militaristic sf to whimsical humorous fantasy and near-horror. Which means no one reader is going to like every tale in the book. However, Ed was impressed even with the quality of some of the pieces they had to reject, and promises the book contains some DYNAMITE (his word) tales. His own contribution is very short, BTW. He also promises a Realms connection in the "very clever" foreword (which is, no, not written by him, but I'm not allowed to reveal who did write it, yet).
Ed and Todd are good friends, from hanging out together at two Ad Astras in a row. Ed is of course good buds with all the Realms writers and with Jim Hines, and is fast becoming friends with most of the up-and-coming Dragon Moon Press authors (who are most of the lesser-known names in the book's roster). Ed deems Gabrielle a first-rank editor, and promises "even if a story in HERO isn't to your taste, it will NOT be poorly written. We didn't invite our friends to contribute because they were our friends, but because we know well what writing they are capable of, and thought them ideal. Gabrielle and I are very proud of this book, and I think rightfully so. I suspect, years down the road, this book will be collectible because it holds the first tales or early tales of writers who have become justifiably famous."
Ed also told me sequel anthologies are very likely in 2012 and later, with more writers invited to the table.
love,
THO

Heh. I'm thinking Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon will be invited to write for the next one, being as they were enthusiastically discussing story ideas with Ed during one of my eavesdroppings. I suspect Ed also asked Dave Duncan and Guy Gavriel Kay, just to name two more I saw him talking with, though I doubt either will do short stories, these days.
I also overheard Ed mentioning one (anonymous) writer who had to bow out because of his wedding, so I'm GUESSING that was George R.R. Martin - - though I could be wrong - - and I'm guessing it was this anthology (but could be wrong about that, too; after all, Ed does get involved in a lot of anthologies, magazines, and web pubs).
And as for intriguing, Dennis, someone asked Ed and Erik Buchanan and another author who's in the book (I THINK it was JM Frey, but I'm not sure what she looks like, so it might have been someone else) to say out just one sentence, from memory, from their stories in HERO, and they did, and the results were VERY intriguing. I also overheard Ed praising the tale penned by Rosemary Jones to Todd McCaffrey, as one he might want to "definitely not miss" . . . so I'm in, the moment this thing becomes available.

Erik, how about a donation to the charity of your choice for a copy with the realms authors? Like $40 if you get all 4 and say am extra $5 for any of the additional authors/editor?

We're all thrilled to be hanging together in this anthology. I had a wonderful time with my story == when I got the invitation, I suddenly had a home for the opening line that had been hanging out in my head for some time: Red Molly spun windershins in the ash and the cinders as the trains rumbled blindly past.

And a very big THANK YOU to Ed and Gabrielle (our other fantastic editor) for letting me stretch the word limits and tell this tale of Red Molly and Turtle.

BTW there's some fantastic science fiction in this anthology as well as high fantasy.

Regards,
Rosemary

Oh I like that line. It's not quite up there with the one Lindsey Davis used to start of her Falco-series, but pretty darn close.

I found it incredibly satisfying that the three longest stories in the book came from Rosemary, Erik, and me. Not Realms tales, but fans of the Realms will be most pleased with the number of pages occupied by Realms favorites (oh, and me, too!).

This sent me back to my spreadsheet to verify. Ha! I hadn't noticed, but Erik and Rosemary do clock in with top word-count. Brian, a couple of the other stories are just a bit longer than yours...but you're close.

Strong fantasy definitely dominates the book. There are five stories I'd call science fiction (including mine), a little urban fantasy, and a few that are harder to classify. A lot of dark stories, some dark humor and some light humor. Hopefully you'll enjoy the contributions from some of our newer voices, as well as the ones from folks you already know. :)

Steve Bornstein gave me a teaser line to post from his story:

"The prince was a greedy oaf of a man, strong enough to replace a pair of oxen in the field and smart enough to replace a pair of oxen in the schoolhouse."

I don't want to hijack any of our scribes' scrolls, but I might drop more hints here and there...

Curses!

I was actually going strictly by page count from the Table of Contents. Perhaps I used words-too-big? Page-breaks aplenty? Ellipsis overdose?

My pride over the matter stands, madam. I hope you don't mind.
