Hey, if it keeps things going, I am not going to argue with it. They can milk the cash cow all they want, as long as they keep making other stuff. Just as long as we don't get Dungeons and Dragons: Dri5zt Edition out of desperation. The game could actually be good though. I have never played them but I hear the Icewind Dale computer games are good and I can't imagine them beind made without Drizzt's popularity. If I ever get around to buying either of the other two games and enjoy them I will probably pick up the Drizzt game if it is similar. |

I think its ridiculous to say "is there anything WOTC won't slap drizzt on." A company isn't selling out or cash cows becasue they utilize their licences to sell products. There is a Game of Thrones card came and board game, and comic books, calender's, busts, minatures, etc. So does George RR martin just slap his name on stuff to make a buck?
The Quality of the product produced dictates the over or careless use of a licence and your power as a consumer dictates if you are for or against said product. If you don't want to support Drizzt related products don't buy them. Anyone else who is a fan (Myself for the past 16 years and now my son)we can buy it and enjoy it. There is obviously a market for it and more people enjoying it than not. Simple as that.
I personally think it is great that a fantasy character and one related to Dungeons and Dragons at that can be gaining such a foot hold in popular culture. Drizzt will be the new starwars and I'm ok with that (as long as George lucas doesn't direct ;) ). I'll not only buy the underwear but I'll buy the lunchbox too.

Well, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask the question. It is obvious that they try to put him wherever they can. What's on the cover to Grand History of the Realms? A montage of characters popularized by Realms fiction and suppliments? Iconic creatures? No, it's Drizzt. In the D&D miniatures game, of all the unique characters who is the one that has more than one sculpted figure? Only Drizzt. With their gargantuan dragon figures, which is the only one to represent a unique dragon and not just a generic dragon? Not the blue (who could have easily been Skie with Kitiara from Dragonlance) or the black and no sign of a green to represent Cyan Bloodbane (with Raistlin Majere no doubt) from Dragonlance. No, just a white to represent Icingdeath complete with Drizzt and Wulfgar. In the video game Demon Stone on one of your stops who do you encounter, Drizzt. In Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2 Drizzt is an unlockable character (Artemis is the other one, so they kept it in the family so to speak). The point is, there is an observable pattern.
Having said that though, and given my stance elsewhere that keeping the setting above water is important enough to make the occasional compromise, I have no problem with it. The folks want Drizzt, give them Drizzt. I honestly wish they would just make a (decent) movie and get it over with (and hopefully get the name out there in a positive light). If I get the chance to play Ravenloft or Wrath of Ashardelon and I like them, I will buy the Drizzt game too. Even though I have a few issues with some parts of them, I have read all but the 4 most recent Drizzt books and I have started reading those. I didn't put them off because I thought they would be disappointing or anything. I just can't take all Salvatore all the time and I have to have other books in between. So, if slapping Drizzt on some merchandise helps keep the Realms around, slap away.
Edit: I just realized as I reread that reply that there was actually one other unique that got a second figure in DDM and I forgot it because it was quite a bit different. It was Snig, a goblin. The original was Snig the Axe and the second was Snig, Warg Rider. We unfortunately never got epic level Snig, Goblin King. |

I enjoyed The God Catcher so I am looking forward to it.
I knew that we would be seeing a Neverwinter-centric push between the NWCG, Salvatore's newest Drizzt books, and the upcoming game, but more Neverwinter books is kind of a surprise to me. Erik (or anyone who can comment that cares to comment), is Erin's novel part of a Neverwinter series? Can/will Erin make any comments about this? |

Eric, I have a couple questions regarding Shadowbane and it's inclusion in the Abyssal Plague lineup.
How big of a role is the Abyssal Plague going to play in Shadowbane?
In the back of RAS Collected Stories it is the 5th book. Do events in the books that preceed it significantly affect it?
Are there common characters, items, gods, etc that link all books and all worlds?
How necessary is it to read the non FR books in the lineup?

After years of reading the forums here at Candlekeep I have finally gotten around to creating myself a profile, so here goes my first ever posting!
It is a real shame that WoTC have decided not to publish any brand new Realms novels in January and February. Looks like 2011 will be almost as bad as 2003 (when only 9 new Realms novels were published) seeing as only 10 novels are on the Amazon listing for this year. Roll on March and the publication of Sandstorm! |

She can, and she will!
The novel is not part of R.A. Salvatore's series. But it is part of a Neverwinter "series" that spreads across other series (think Abyssal Plague, but much smaller) and there are interconnecting pieces. I believe Salvatore and I have a few characters in common? Both books--and future books--are connected to the campaign guide (which is why Erik's seen my outline. He statted up my villain!) and MMO, and we're both set in and around Neverwinter.
Like Jaleigh's and Erik's recent and upcoming books, Brimstone Angels is the start of a character series, and I can confirm I've been contracted for two more books in the series. Also, the summary on the Amazon page is a little bit off...Close, but I'm not sure where monster-hunting came in.
I can also clear up the question of the anthology mentioned upthread: It's a collection of stories, set in various D&D worlds. Some are authors who've written for Wizards before but a lot of them are authors who've made their names elsewhere but jumped at the chance to write a short story about the game or world they loved. So the settings are a mix, but there are some good Realms stories in there! Including Mark Sehestedt's. |

Thanks for popping in and sharing with us. So, would it be fair to say that there is a focus on Neverwinter centric products, now and into the future (at least a short way), but not necessarily interconnecting stories?

The only products I am sure about are Bob's Neverwinter Nights Trilogy, the Neverwinter CG, Cryptic's MMO, and Brimstone Angels. However, like Unbroken Chain, Brimstone Angels is the series title. The fact that it has the Neverwinter series title as well suggests that, yes, there will be further novels set there, probably playing off the other products.
Brimstone Angels takes place before The God Catcher chronologically, so none of the characters cross over in this book. One of the characters from "The Resurrection Agent" makes it in, though, and I can promise who will and won't appear in future books. I'd certainly love to revisit TGC's characters, if the story suits them. |

Those are from the last few pages of Sandstorm. There are two other intersting items back there. There is a page dedicated to Neverwinter products. Erin's novel Brimstone Angels is listed with a subtitle, Legends of Neverwinter.
The other item of note is a listed Cooperative Board Game (listed seperate from the RPG book). Given that the Drizzt board game is set to come out later this yeat, this listing could just be the Drizzt game. Or, it could be something else entirely. |

The Amazon listings for Shadowbane (Sept. 6), Brimstone Angels (Nov. 1), and Unbroken Chain: The Darker Road (July 5) now have cover art and product descriptions for anyone interested. The product picture on the WotC page for Unbroken Chain 2 looks much clearer/brighter. Also, the Amazon page for Chosen of Nendawen: Cry of the Ghost Wolf (Dec. 6) has a product description now.
Some other updates/additions I noticed across other D&D lines:
-There is now a description and cover art for Death Mark (Dark Sun novel) (Nov. 1)
-There is now a description and cover art for Draconic Prophecies: Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited Omnibus (Nov. 1)
-There is apparently going to be a Dungeon of Dread Board Game (Dec.13)
-There will be another tile set in December (the 20th) called Shadowghast Manor |
