My mistake. Not skin, but hair and eyes. Here's a description of Lorren, formerly Morandis, from the Returning scene in A Darkness at Sethanon:

He had the dark hair and eyes common to the moredhel, but then so did a few other elves, just as an occasional moredhel was blond and blue-eyed.

Every beginning has an end.

Indeed. And as I recall, the only change after his Return was that he then seemed to be an elf, instead of a moredhel -- like an aura or something other intangible like that had changed, but nothing physical.

I've always thought that was an interesting variation on dark elves. It'd be nifty if there was, in FR, some ritual that would turn a willing drow into a moon or gold elf.

In the same book, it was mentioned that other than attitude, the two races have subtle difference in stance. And Calis once mentioned that even if they switch clothes, they would still easily identify each other---calling it their 'instinct.'

Okay, all that stuff is kind of beyond me ATM, but sounds interesting! I will note that the GN had the Dark Brothers being literally dark-skinned as well (sort of dark gray), but that might just be artistic license and/or the popularity of "dark elves" in general in fantasy. I'll look for those books, though!

Edit: Actually, Wooly, in my HB world, there is! I used the concept of the Banishing and Krynn's version of "dark elves"" (ie- the ritual of the magic chain and mirror that judges whether an elf has gone "dark") to create the drow of my realm of Anterris. They were originally ALL gray or high elf clans who turned on their kin out of greed, ambition, and envy, and tried to overthrow their kingdoms (much like what the Vyshaan did) but were discovered. It led to several massive civil wars, and in the end, the elves who had not turned to evil had to call on the gods to curse the traitors just so they could tell them apart.

The High Magic ritual that transformed them is still used on individual elves who are found to have committed heinous crimes against other elves. So some of my drow were actually BORN as other races, and still remember what it was like to be gray, high, or wood elves (In my world, Gray= Moon, Sun= High, and Wood are still the same. Interestingly, I have a variation of the High Magic ritual of Revival from the Cormanthyr book that can return a drow to the original "dark elf" race- except that in this case, it turns him into whatever type of elf his clan originally was.

As difficult as it is for me to properly justify this, I think we'd best return to the basic off-topic discussion of this largely off-topic scroll. We don't really need to go even further off-topic, eh?

Well, We WERE discussing a novel/graphic novel, which is sort of related to comics. And Strange is a comic character, so....

True. But this entire topic was largely off-topic anyway. And to go further off-topic in an already off-topic discussion twists and turns my mental capacities in ways that even the meandering of SageTime could never accomplish*...

Is anyone familiar with Rufus Sewell? I think he'd make a good Doctor Strange. He's done quite a lot of serious roles both in films and TV.

Patrick Dempsey Wants to Play Dr. Strange

Star of Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey, really wants to play a different kind of Doctor. Doctor Strange. And comics artist-working-in-Hollywood Arne Starr seems to agree, whipping up this piece of art that got Dempsey seen by Marvel Studios.

And now a movie has been announced, with screenwriters hired for the job.

With Dempsey still rather popular from Disney’s Enchanted with a sequel in the works, could this be a very easy piece of casting for the studio?

----------------------

Given that Disney bought Marvel, and that Patrick has now become one of Disney's favorites, this is a rather big possibility. He's played a good doctor in Grey's Anatomy, so another doctor role might not be a problem. What do you think?

Well, I've not seen Dempsey in anything, so I'm not too comfortable judging his acting ability.

Visually, and physically, I'd say he could pull of a "young" Stephen Strange, but as to whether he'd bring anything particular to the character, I cannot say.

Dempsey was the lawyer. The prince was James Marsden.

I really loved that movie, and just the "How does she know?" sequence by itself was worth the price of the movie ticket!

I like that movie, too. Great music. I didn't know Amy Adams could sing.

The "cleaning" scene shouldn't have included Manshoon's and Wormtail's cousins, though. It was disgusting.

Hopefully it's just a sick joke. I can't recall any movie where Carell played a serious role. If Disney/Marvel are serious in getting him for the DS role, then they must have planned to make Dr. Strange look like Joker.

At least Heath Ledger's not around to do it. I know that sounds harsh or crude, but honestly, I HATED his Joker. I'd like to see Alan Rickman do it. (Sans accent, hopefully.)

I just love his voice!!! It's so perfect for Strange, somehow, and he already has a sort of "mystical" look. Could be the HP books, though....

Well, Strange is not the typical GQ "handsome" hero of the MU. He's got a more dark and sinister look than most. That's why I think Rickman would fit the bill.

Yes, I thought he went WAAAY too far over the line between the "clownish" side and the darker, insane aspect of the character. To be blunt, the Joker has ALWAYS had something of a twisted sense of humor, even at his most sadistic. In the comics and earlier movies and even in the cartoons, he always somehow manages to make you laugh at his schemes and crimes, even the really sick and cruel ones. I just didn't get that from Ledger. I didn't think there was anything "funny" about him at all. That pretty much ruined the movie for me. At least Nicholson was able to keep that balance. When he gave that line" Why so serious?". I wanted to slap him and go- "Yeah, why are YOU so damn serious?!" I know that Joker is a sadistic nut-job, but he should at LEAST have style. That's always been part of his appeal. Case in point, a crossover issue with Marvel starring Batman and Spider-Man, where he escaped from Arkham and then got Carnage out of Ravencroft. They tried to work together to take down each other's respective enemies, but he eventually turned on Carnage, because he got fed up with Carnage's lack of panache. As he said in that ish, "Anyone can butcher, but it takes a real master to kill with STYLE!" That line to mee sums him up perfectly. Ledger did NOT. (IMNSHO.)

Sorry, I still find it difficult to imagine Snape--er, Rickman, donning the robe of the Sorcerer Supreme. He can be one of the Ancient One's students, though. Not Mordo, of course. He doesn't have the muscles.

Snape? LOL!! See, I'm remembering him in Robin Hood, as Nottingham. That look would be perfect for Dr. Strange, too. Yes, he's older now, but he can still pull it off with a bit of clever make-up. That's the beauty of acting, and especially with CG these days, an actor can look like they did at their prime, and do things that were not possible twenty years ago. Like Jeff Bridges's role from Tron: Legacy. They made Clu look like he did in the original. I could certainly see doing something similar with the former Sheriff of Nottingham. And he is decent-looking, in a broody sort of way, which is what I think Strange needs. Not a heartthrob hunk type of actor. Sadly, I think that may be what we end up with.

...Are you sure you watched the same movie? I found Ledger's Joker to be hilarious during certain parts, horrifing during others, and stylish all the way through.
