Jon Irenicus was a villain from Baldur's gate 2 game and a powerful mage. Can he beat Elminster? What do you think?

Not a chance!

As in all things, it depends on time, place, preparation, who gets the drop on who, and so forth. The one major advantage Elminster has over Jon Irenicus is his age and experience (not say Irenicus isn't both of those things, but El is almost certainly wider travelled) as well as Elminster's Chosen of Mystra status. It offers him a greater capacity for spellcasting, all but immortality, and many other benefits that Irenicus lacks.

As LoB said.

And of course, as long as Ed lives, El is bound to stay.

What my predecessors wrote is correct but I add one small thing: Irenuces's official stats are much weaker then that of Elminster, so it is clear that the former elf has no chance at all.

Any number of variables could skew an X vs. Y battle one way or the other. It's one of the many things that makes these discussions purely subjective. These discussions are also very much discouraged, per section B4 of the Candlekeep Forum Code of Conduct.

Therefore, I am locking this scroll.
