Hello fellow Sages of Candlekeep!

I have been having the itch to do some role-playing for a while now, but none in the area to play with so I've decided to run a Pathfinder Rules campaign in the Forgotten Realms Setting starting around 1369 or even as far as 1372 as a Play-by-Post campaign.

First and foremost I'd like to see if anyone would want to be in such a campaign so feel free to pin your name here or privately send me a letter to my box (PM) to show interest in playing.

However, ladies and men of good or ill repute I have some requirements that I shall unveil to you now so some of your most basic of inquires can be answered to see if this campaign is for you.

The requirements are as follows:

1. Must at least post once every other day but would prefer at least once a day, but I am flexible if real life needs your attention more than the game at hand. It is a game after all so a notification would be preferable if you'd be absent for long periods of time and you have knowledge beforehand of conflicts.

2. As for characters the standard races with some minor exceptions of standard races presented in the 3.0 FRCS handbook will be allowed for the campaign. I know playing vampires, werewolves, and other powerful creatures are on the rage to play these days by most, but for game balance I am excluding them unless I am given a really, REALLY good story as to why your character should be the exception. And I'm expecting heavy originality and an epic masterpiece of handwriting that I just can't lay down. So if you can do that by all means send it in and I'll consider it, but no promises I'll even accept it after that. However, I'll thank you for the excellent read!

3. The campaign I would like to run would be a stand alone campaign setting from the books. That doesn't mean I'm throwing them out the window just that the events you may be intertwined with and might even have a slight impact on, but they will not be the focal point of this campaign. This campaign will be a Cloak and Dagger and Adventuring Campaign centered around Waterdeep (Yes - the City of Splendors) in a splinter organization of the City Watch and Guard of elite investigators that answers only to the Open Lord himself. The sole purpose of this organization is ferreting out threats to the city's well being. If it helps think of yourselves as an elite group brought together to take on threats both foreign and domestic that are just above the pay grade of any normal Watchmen or Guardsmen.

4. Classes are pretty much open to all (even monk, druids, and barbarian, but you will have to ask permission before hand and give me a solid concept as to why you are playing these odd characters in a C&D group and part of the world). Some may say why would a ranger or paladin be good for a C&D, but I think they fit so I'm not putting a restriction on the class.

5. Finally, I am not keen on having evil characters in a party. They seem to always break up parties (or, in most cases, ends up getting killed by the party members or them killing the party) so I'm not allowing those alignments. I am, however; willing to bend certain restrictions slightly to allow certain concepts with restrictions on prestige classes, but I think most classes such as the rogue in PF cover the need for those that want to be assassin-like without actually taking the assassin prestige class. Also as a final note I have no real need to have everyone fill every niche in the party. It would be nice to have a decent composition for the sake of ease on you guys, but if you all go all rogues that works too. It'll just make you more reliant on outsiders for other areas of expertise, which gives me even more ways to make you paranoid - I mean - help you guys out!

Anyways, there you are I hope to see some interest, because I would like to GM again and play with some people in the setting I love and enjoy! Hopefully we will have this PbP up in running in The Inn here shortly!

Invention is the key to staying ahead of the competition.

Well Met, Sian.

Both good questions.

For your first question I would prefer to start at level one, but I'm willing to move up to level three if everyone is bent on having multi-classed characters to start off with. The reason for this is I want you to have time to get a feel for your character and develop him/her in game play as it moves along then just saying you did this and that on a piece of paper.

For the second question I'm going to say we are rolling stats. You can use either your dice at home or a generator. The rolling method will be one set at 4d6, drop the lowest die, re-roll lowest or one stat of your choice - this is optional, and must have at least a 14 after the re-roll with at least a total bonus of +1 or re-roll the entire set. This is going to be a deadly campaign so you need to be slightly better than your average adventurer.

So at the very least you should have a character with one exceptional ability after racial buff. Also if you choose to be an elf other than moon or sun sub-race message me and we'll work out the adjustments and racial advantages.

Edit Note: Also since PF has made the races stronger, the other races like a genasi or more powerful characters will not have level adjustments. Though races like drow, svirneblin, etc will still need to get special permission from me first with a solid concept to be allowed.

Invention is the key to staying ahead of the competition.

I am interested, though I have not had good experience with the one or two PbP games I have been involved in.

My vote would be for 3rd level characters, just because 1st level characters are so fragile, and 1st level spellcasters are especially gimped. Also, for the Cormyr game I ran for my local group, I just told them subtract 1 from the LA to get a 3.x race's PFRPG LA.

Thanks,
Hawkins

It sounds fun. By standard races, what do you mean exactly? Anything from the #.5 FRCS? Does that include sub-races? Also, what classes other than PHB are allowed? (I'm referring to things like Swashbucklers, Duskblades, that sort of thing....)

since its going by Pathfinder rules i'd suspect that its primarily aiming at using those classes ... though ... honestly, the reason for an upgrade of them was at least to a certain degree to get them back on line with Splat book classes

If you haven't yet, DEFINITELY check out the Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide. It's given a lot of 'alternate options' to both Races and Classes by swapping out new abilities for old to build many of the variant races, optional base classes and splat-book prestige classes. The only thing I would pull from the splat books are the oriental classes, but even then you could 'build' your own based on what they have in the APG.

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Well met, HawkinstheDM and Alystra Illianniis!

Hmm, alright everyone shall start at level three then. And yes every race except for svirfneblin, and drow are playable.

As for dealing with adjustment levels I have a leveling scale for those that are more powerful to award there abilities as they level in their class then just all at the beginning. But since we are starting at level three it isn't necessary to implement it. And yes all sub-races are allowed, but only out of the FRCS book. I'm not allowing Races of Faerun into the mix except for the feats it offers for your race.

As for classes I'm sticking with just the core classes for this game, but if you wish to take a prestige class that is of a Realms source book let me know ahead of time and I'll work on the necessary adjustments to bring it to PF standards. Usually though the only thing that needs to be changed is for clerics and the minimum skill requirements.

However, I will say this if you wish to be a Duskblade try checking out the Eldritch Knight Prestige Class in the PF Core Book. It is very similar to that and slightly more balanced if I remember the Duskblades at all.

Okay just to recap. All races in the FRCS are allowed including sub-races except for drow, and svirfneblin (deep gnome) which need special permission from me first to be allowed to play. Druegar are allowed as a playable race, but must be within the rules on alignments I stated earlier. I've looked through most of the lore I can find and as far as I know that sub-race of dwarf isn't really hated/distrusted except by other dwarves and most surface races have very little knowledge of them, but you should be able to work just fine in a cosmopolitan setting.

So far I have one person playing a human paladin.

Now for the good stuff. Your character doesn't have to be in the City Watch or Guard of Waterdeep to start with, though there will be perks in game for you already being in either of them. However, you must be at least on good standing with Waterdeep, or, in case you play a rogue, must be on good behavior.

Also I need you to send to me privately what your character's goals and loyalties (friends, family, faith, etc.) are. Preferably mark them in order of most to least in matter to loyalty. The list doesn't have to be long at this point, but it is just to give me an idea of possibly how your character will react in certain situations should and if they arise.

Okay that was a lot to type. For the length I apologize, but I figure I should be thorough.

___________________________________________________________________

Well , begin to present the character that I proposed :

Coming in Waterdeep , Apollo Icaor establishes its first step to reach Ten Cities . His father, a prominent figure of Candlekeep, Frejus Icaor , the reference to the family castle to recover the emblem of the hand sign of Azur for his ascent Paladin .

Apollo is a robust man with gray hair Azur . He does a bag (containing the necessary voyage) and a long sword . On landing at Waterdeep , he rubbed his arm. The young knight had forgotten the feeling of cold. He thought better equipped to immediately following his journey. Even if it was the type to take risks , he would remember the advice of his friend from Candlekeep . It would be stupid to die in a single trip to his family home.

Okay, I'm getting really frustrated here. Does anyone know the differnces in the PF wizard and monk classes from the 3.5 ones? I am on a very tight budget at the moment so I can't afford to buy any PF books to compare. Any ideas? I'd still like to join- but I need the stat changes to draw mine up. Otherwise, I'd be good to go.... As to loyalties etc, for my PC, that's easy. He's very loyal to family and friends- in that order- has no particular faith (Oghma if any) and would be on "good" terms with a least a few of the Watch or Guard (at least the ones who "trust" him, which might not be many...) The rest might see him as a loose cannon, as it were. does that help? Sorry, I know you wanted a pm for that, but I'm putting it out for others to see what I'm playing. One question- I would like to go Enlightened Fist PrC with him later. Is that alright?

You can check out all the Pathfinder rules at their PRD or by downloading the Conversion pdf. Here's the Wizard and http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/classes/monk.html#monk]Monk[/url] classes.

The biggest change with the Wizard is you can choose between a familiar or a focus now, and the Schools grant powers instead of bonuses to spells (and if you're not a Specialist, then you get the Universal school).

The Monk's pretty much the same, but the Flurry of blows has been altered to make it more like two-weapon fighting when it comes to penalties and such.

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

That's fine just as long as I have the information at hand I don't care where I get it. As for the PrC I believe that is fine can you give me the Sourcebook it is in. I have seen so many PrCs in books they kind of mesh together.

And I can sure whip up some npcs you know on both if you wish. You'll probably have more Guard buddies then Watch ones, but I'll give you a fair amount of people that owe you favors or at least see you as a trusted friend or ally.

And thank you, Ashe, for the link. Sorry if I wasn't much help to you, Alystra, with my links I gave you earlier. I am notoriously awful at finding things on the internet. I just usually have to over turn a lot of rocks before I find what it is I was looking for at the time.

Anyways, if you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask.

No, that's fine, Abenabin(Sheesh, your user name is a real mouthful!!). The links were most helpful, Ashe! (And did I mention that Ash is my cat's name, too? Lol! I'm an Evil Dead fan... ;P ) As Sian said, Enlightened Fist is in Complete Arcane. The only change to it I might make is an energy substitution. It currently allows either fire or electricity, but I was thinking of using sonic. But that's up to you.

*Chuckles* Sorry I like playing gnomes and I usually have long absurd names like my name here! :D

More on topic though, that sounds fine. I believe I remember the prestige class from that so feel free to use it. And I'm fine with the sonic idea actually. I always thought it a bit odd monks could summon fire or electricity with that PrC so I usually avoided it. Sonic just makes more sense in my opinion so go ahead and make those necessary changes.

I'm really interested, but i've never done a PbP game before so I'm not really sure how why class levels are needed and how do we show our rolls? Is there a program or something?

Next question, if we're starting at 3rd level, do we give ourselves enough money to start out at 3rd via the DMG? For example, a 3rd level character would start with 2,700 gp which includes the starting money of a character.

And are we still sticking with classes from the PFRD only or can we branch out to say the Hexblade and of course, is the Book of 9 swords being totally exiled?

Thanks, Abe (Can I call you Abe? And I kinda figured it was a gnomish name... lol!) Now that you mention it, the sonic idea DOES make a lot of sense for a monk. (Thinking of all those awesome martial-arts films, here....)

Diffan, I've done a few of these elsewhere, and yes, there is a dice-roller program on the WotC site (can't remember the exact address ATM) Just think of it as a table-top game done via posts.

if reading earlier in the thread, Diffan its rather speficicly said that he'd prefer only core classes (and Prestiges being debated at some point) ... 900g

by the way ... minor suggestion

could you (OOC) list rough Race/Classes so people have an idea about which 'spots' are allready in use, or prehaps overstacked

Well Met, Diffan!

As previously said the PFCB for core classes is only allowed, but PrCs I'm letting in from various sourcebooks. However, I'd prefer to stay with PrCs from Realm source material in 3.5 Sourcebooks, but I'm open to other ones as long as they are 3.5 rules updated. Though please ask permission first before you do.

We are starting at 3rd level, but only at 900g starting funds. I know that isn't the usual going rate, but I'm going to give you all some goods/magic items/perks depending on what you are playing.

Alystra,

lol Abe is fine. I know it is a long name so that works.

Also I'm excluding the Nine Swords book for that is one of the books I never bought. It just never appealed to me plus at the time was feeling a bit overwhelmed with the sudden flux of books towards the end of 3.5 with WotC. So I would prefer to stay as much as possible with PF core material then adding in a lot of supplements.

Sian,

I sure can supply that list. Here is what we have currently:

Human Monk/Wizard

Human Paladin

Tiefling Rogue/Wizard

I'll leave the names out for now just in case people would prefer to be known as an alias then their chars true name to the group.

However you all know Balduran's paladin's name since he has already posted it up. I think we all know that the paladin probably wouldn't conceal his true name considering he is, of course, a paladin.

That said you can double up on same races and or class combos, but I'd suggest trying pick a combo not current being used.

I'll say now for those that may just want to play a pure fighter class type I am adding in a Profession (Detective) skill that you can take that won't make you necessarily as proficient in spotting clues as someone with the search or perception skill, but you at least will be able to participate in fact finding or searching for clues with the group and not feel left out. In addition you can use the skill as a way to earn cash or preform daily mundane tasks like paper work more easily, but you don't have to take it if you don't want to. It is mainly just for the person that might want to play a pure fighter role or be the muscle of the group.

The nice thing about Diplomacy though in PF is that Gather Information was rolled into it. So now you can at least be somewhat diplomatic and be able to find out the word on the street! I thought that was a good idea on their part that was kind of overdue.

One point to remind people that the skill system isn't as steep in PF as it was in previous editions. So putting into cross-class skills isn't necessary a waste of a skill point.

Anyways, if any of you have any further questions feel free to PM me or post it here and I'll do my best to answer it quickly or one of your fellow players will as you already can see.

Good to know, just making sure I don't come up with a concept and then have it squashed and 900 is definitly resonable. I'll come up with something "divine" to sort of fill in the Healer/buffer role.

Well I asked because I often use the ToB:Bo9S to multi-class (I just love the flavor of the Crusader) and/or take feats/maneuvers/stances for general classes like the fighter, paladin, and ranger. Again, just figured I'd ask so I got my bases covered.

How's about a nice human cleric of Helm? I'll go more in depth with his backround, stats, and basic character knowledge in a PM to you.

Don't get me wrong the book was very interesting take on things, which then was carried over into 4th Edition (it is also a solid system, but just way too many splat books for my tastes, which is why I'm not playing it).

However, you did remind me of something I should have stated at the beginning. You all are getting a free Regional Feat of your choice. It has to be a Regional Feat or a Racial Feat, which ever is more appropriate in your eyes. The reason for this is I always thought it a little lame you didn't get a Regional Feat for free considering you are from the particular region like everyone else there. Why shouldn't you have it just because you only get 1 feat at 1st level (or more depending on which class you picked and race). It'll add some character to, well, your character to have it I think. And most aren't going to really impact the game play at all except give you a little flavor to your background.

Yea, I can respect and understand that. Its when people say that it's overpowered or broken or that the classes/system doesn't fit into the Realms is where I get annoyed. But using the PF system is perfectly fine with me and I like most (if not all) of the changes they made.

I whole-heartedly agree. When I DM a Realms 3.5/PF campaign I always start out with giving them 1 free Regional feat to flesh out and "flavor-ize" their characters.

EDIT: Figured I'd follow this up with another question: when we pick a Region (say Waterdeep for example) as our backround, we normally get equipment associated with that Region as stated in the PGtF so should we add that in or leave it out and have you decide on a case-by-case basis? (I'm going with Waterdeep and I'm eyeing up those two 2nd level scrolls )

Yes, you do get to pick one of the regional equipment from your regions list as well as the Regional feat.

Just need everyone's character's name and I think I can begin the role-playing part in the Inn here so we can get this jump started. Names I don't have right now are from Alystra and Diffan (though I know you just showed interest so this isn't intended to rush you). Once I have names I'll put up the post and we can all get started!

I'm not at my home computer with the Character sheet on it but my cleric's first name is Larric (I can't remember the last name). Do you want me to post the character sheet here or PM it to you?

Okay. The wizard/monk's name is Petrius but he will go by Liante in-game.

Et bien, et bien. Nous sommes combien pour l'aventure ? Vous connaissez mon petit descriptif de départ, mais je me garde les détails bien sûr. Quand à vous, avez-vous un petit quelque chose histoire de vous connaître humblement ?

wonderful! The feat/equipment stuff may help me with the direction I want to go with this character. I just need to dig out my FRCS book, to look up the regional info, and try to remember what my 3rd lvl stats were (I've already got a version of him written down, but it's 8th lvl....) Should have it later today- I'll pm it to you when I get it all together.
