I'm still relatively new to FR as a setting...I read half of Salvatore's Drizzt books many years ago, and have been meaning to start reading the rest of the books. (I've been collecting them for a while now, always in anticipation of that mystical day when I'd finally get going.)
A couple recent news items have gotten my interest, and I find myself needing to ask about them. Please keep in mind that my interest has always been solely on the novels, so I'm not too concerned with how the game settings are affected.
1. Re: Philip Athens' departure. Does anyone know what the significance of this is as relates to the novels? Are they scaling back the novels, or ramping up? Or will there be no noticeable change from the reader's perspective?
2. The Abyssal Plague. I'm completely ignorant of other D&D worlds (Dragonlance, etc.), and for the time being I intend to continue that way (got enough on my plate with FR). But this "worlds-spanning event" has me wondering just what they plan here. Are they going to start mixing the worlds more, maybe even merging them? I guess I'm just concerned that when I reach that point in the story, I'll be missing some important details if other settings start getting involved.
I may have framed these questions oddly, due to my lack of knowledge about the FR world, so hopefully you understand what I'm getting at. Thanks!

1) I don't know if Phil's layoff shows them changing their novel line's publishing schedule. For now, nothing's changed.
2) One of the key things about the Realms is the abundance of portals to other worlds. Ed's articles have Elminster coming to our Earth for a visit (and meeting with famous mages from other settings) and the noval Tymora's Luck was a crossover between Dragonlance and the Realms (and there's *still* a kender running around out there ... somewhere ...)
I don't know what they're plan for the Abyssal* Plague is, other than it will effect all the worlds somehow (you got Dark Sun in my Eberron! You got Eberron in my Dark Sun! Two tastes that taste great together). My theory is that a hero from the PoL base setting (Nentir Vale?) will be planeswalking through all the different worlds so that you can get the heroic team-ups** and a sight-seeing tour*** for those that don't normally go outside their comfort zone.
* I had to retype Abyssal three times. My Freundian fingers kept typing Abysmal 
** Hmmm... Maybe the decision makers have been reading DC/Marvel the last couple of years.

True, but then Spelljammer was all about tying together the different spheres. This one strikes me as somewhat different, and given the dearth of Planescape and Spelljammer material since the WoTC takeover...
Practically every TSR-published fantasy setting has reached across into other worlds at some point. Some, like PLANESCAPE and SPELLJAMMER, simply had a framework that allowed for a more integrated and comprehensive expansion into other worlds. But both the Realms and DRAGONLANCE have a long history of planar travel, both to the planes, and other Prime Material worlds. |
