Mine would be the back cover of 3e Shining South, with the waterfall and the dragon about to take off.

So, which is your favourite? I'm thinking novels as well as source books (some of the cover art for recent novels has been pretty spiffy as well).

Bonus points if you can give a link to the art in question!

Pre 3e sourcebook -- I'd have to say the cover of Dreams of the Red Wizards by Clyde Caldwell [see here:- http://www.clydecaldwell.com/jpgs/large_images/dreams_of_red_wizard.jpg]

Pre 3e novel -- Spellfire, again by Clyde Caldwell [see here:- http://www.clydecaldwell.com/jpgs/large_images/spellfire.jpg]

[Yes, I'm a Caldwell fan ]

3e sourcebook -- I'd have to say the cover for Serpent Kingdoms by Michael Sutfin [see here:- http://www.candlekeep.com/images/products/96566.jpg]. Honourable mention for Scott M Fischer's cover for City of Splendors: Waterdeep [see here:- http://www.candlekeep.com/images/products/88162.jpg].

3e novel --'Twas, until recently, Duane O. Meyers's Blackstaff [because it kinda reminds me of the Ditko-era Doctor Strange of Marvel Comics:- http://www.candlekeep.com/images/novels/bs_w1.jpg]. But now I'm particularly fond of Greg Ruth's cover for Unholy [see here:- http://www.candlekeep.com/images/novels/thl3.jpg]. Honourable mentions for the three covers of the "House of Serpents" trilogy.

...

Oh, and I forgot the 4e novels:-

I'd have to vote for the unknown artist working on the covers for the "Abolethic Sovereignty" trilogy.

First Edition novel: Spellfire (I agree, Sage; no contest on this one)
First Edition game product: The Magister (honourable mention to The Savage Frontier and Dreams of the Red Wizards; I'm a Caldwell fan too, but Jeff Easley will always be the king of D&D cover art for me; Larry Elmore will forever hold that title for Dragon cover art).
Second Edition novel: Crypt of the Shadowking
Second Edition game product: Halls of the High King
Third Edition novel: Elminster in Hell
Third Edition game product: either Dragons of Faerun or Sons of Gruumsh, depending on whether I'd prefer the PCs burned to a crisp or hacked to bits.

The cover art that I've seen online for Ed's upcoming Elminster Must Die! looks pretty nice (if it's the cover we'll actually see on the published title); no comment as to 4E game products, except to say that the Campaign Guide cover art that I saw in product previews looked way better than the cover the FRCG actually got (although I will admit that the latter is one of the better renditions of Drizzt I've seen in a while).

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

I always liked the cover of the old Grey boxed set. A great piece of art with a lot of nostalgia attached.

This is a tough one. The Grey box cover, the covers of Darkwalker on Moonshae and Soldiers of Ice would be my first choices I think. FR2 the Moonshaes, The Azure Bonds, Red Magic, FR16 The Shining South and N4 Treasure Hunt are contenders.

This is a tough one to narrow down. Anything by Todd Lockwood is amazing. But what captivated me early was my first realms product purchase of the 2E Campaign Setting with Elminster and Drizzt on the cover with the sky blue colour. That was my first visual impression of the realms and it sticks in my head still today.

I always liked the cover to Unapproachable East for some reason.

words unwritten and set them down ere they fade . . . Learn

Agreed.

Anything with Red Wizards or Szass Tam on the cover is almost an instant win for me in terms of artwork.

My personal faves:

Novels: Clyde Caldwell's cover for the first edition of Spellfire. Pretty strong stuff. Nothing says "high adventure" like a young blonde blasting the... ahem... solid human waste... out of a skeletal dragon.

Gaming products: Caldwell again - the cover for the 1990 Forgotten Realms Adventures hardcover.

Most of my adventures and campaigns turned more out like Jim Holloways more humorous pictures. Remember the one (it was at least used in an issue of Dragon)with the party looking at the Kua-Toa skeleton? That one is the usual every day adventure.

OK, so that was a bit of-topic. Sorry.

Todd Lockwood Drizzt stuff is good

When hinges creak in doorless chambers and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls, whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight.

I think we've covered this topic before... But I'll rename my pics. For novels, it would be The Crystal Shard -- I love Larry Elmore's stuff. For sourcebooks, it's more Elmore: The Bloodstone Lands. I just love that artwork -- every time I see the picture, I have to wonder about the story behind it. That, to me, is one of the marks of good artwork.

Agreed. I always tended toward doing that with his DRAGONLANCE stuff. And Jeff Easley's too.

Nothing like a little unwarranted carnage and destruction Champions of Ruin style. Honourable mentions for TPKs go to Lost Empires of Faerūn and Players Guide to Faerūn (if you include the back covers of those two).
