Greetings
Yesterday i had an discussion with a friend about The Realms and the amount of hours a commoner works per day.
Of course it depends on the region, perhaps in Silverymoon working conditions should be better than, say Sembia or Zhentil keep.
i believe folk even in fair lands toil hard, working "till the sun goes down" while the 8-hour shift is almost unheard of. I think the FRCS (3rd) says something like that
Another topic: I was wondering how would a fair ruler (say Alustriel or King Azoun IV) respond to a peasant riot? Sending armoured knights to squash the rebelion is the Zhents way, but on the other hand taxes must be payed and people are not happy doing so (specially when the harvest gone bad)

It also depends on what your job is. Farmers tend to begin before the sun is up and work long hours during the summer, taking it easier during the colder months. Other than that, caravan guards are around the clock, and I'm sure most others use the period of day and there is likely an 8 hours semblance of sorts, but like Sage said, asking Ed is the best way to go to be sure. |

I'm not sure if it matters if the realm is "just" or not when it comes to how they would deal with a peasant riot (which were common in medieval Europe.) I think most of us would consider most nations in the West today as "just," but rioting is put down. I would imagine the same goes for the Realms. Now after the riot we might see some differences, where in some places the leaders of the riot would be arrested and given jail time, while in other places the leaders would be executed. |
