My players, being all fairly low level still, find themselves doing a lot of hunting to come up with food and some money. I've been pressed hard to keep coming up with ideas of what they have managed to track, so I decided to create a series of tables to help me out. I offer them here for anyone who may be interested.
Hunting Charts Roll 1d6 (re-roll 6) and 1d100 and consult chart
1. Big Game Percentile Roll Animal 01-10 Deer 11-20 Moose 21-30 Elk 31-40 Reindeer 41-50 Bear, Brown 51-60 Bear, Black 61-70 Ram 71-80 Boar 81-90 Buffalo 91-100 Sheep
2. Small Game Percentile Roll Animal 01-20 Rabbit 21-30 Squirrel 31-40 Raccoon 41-60 Badger 61-70 Opossum 70-84 Pig 85-100 Goat
3. Fur-bearers Percentile Roll Animal 01-10 Beaver (2 gp) 11-20 Fox (3-5 gp) 21-30 Mink (3 gp) 31-40 Muskrat (5 sp) 41-50 Ermines (4 gp) 51-60 Weasel ( 1 gp) 61-70 Otter (2-3 gp) 71-80 Raccoon (1 gp) 81-90 Woodchucks (1 gp) 91-100 Bobcat (5 gp)
4. Birds Percentile Roll Animal 01-20 Turkey 21-30 Pheasant 31-40 Quail 41-55 Duck 56-70 Goose 71-100 Chicken
5. Monster Percentile Roll Animal 01-08 Ankheg 09-16 Beetle, Bombardier 17-24 Beetle, Boring 25-32 Beetle, Fire 33-40 Cat, Great 41-48 Cockatrice 49-56 Ettercap 57-64 Harpy 65-75 Giant lizard 76-83 Manticore 84-91 Owlbear 92-100 Wolf

That's a good idea, especially when they get a little higher up in level. It'll make things interesting for them. |

How about adding reptiles?
I tried to keep the chart somewhat low to mid level, that's why I didn't add monsters like the bulette.
I had also thought of adding a 6th table for reptiles, but right now my characters are in winter in a temperate area, so the idea of them hunting reptile creatures seemed a bit illogical. But it is certainly something you could add, if you wished.
I simply offered the charts here to everyone in case others out there may find them useful. You are more then welcome to use it and alter it for your own uses. |

Just an addition for the 6th set of monsters: 6. Monsters and oddballs (not necessarily game) Percentile Roll Animal 01-08 Bulette 09-16 Displacer Beast 17-24 Dragon, Green (change to white in winter) 25-32 Dragon, Pseudodragon 33-40 Ettin 41-48 Gargoyle 49-56 Griffon/Hippogriff 57-64 Goblin raiders (1d8 warriors and 1 shaman) 65-75 Lizardfolk hunters 76-83 Minotaur 84-91 Orc Raiders (1d20+3 warriors plus 1 shaman 92-100 Unicorn
The ranges of CR are 1 (for any of the humanoids with a class level to a maximum of 7 for the Bulette. Put the PC's at level 4, and this chart is very viable. The reason I chose green is because I figured it would be mostly forests where they would hunt. If they are in swamps, or other regions, swap as necessary.

Pretty good there. You can also make sub-charts saying what the creature(s) is doing (grazing, resting, moving about, stationary, etc...) |

That's a pretty good idea. But I'm not a hunter myself, so I have no clue about what some of these animals may do. What other things could they do? You got grazing and moving as you already stated. I figured you could add "hunting", as some of the creatures could be hunting other animals themselves. Or you could also say they were hunting vegetation. "Sleeping" could be another action that they were doing. Anything else? |
