Much like Pandora's box, once a PDF is "out there" on the internet, it can never be "un-opened". How do Wizards think it won't spread anyway even after "it leaves the website" and how will this affect sales of the paper version?

| Why, gamers would NEVER do that Kyrene! Even if the file has no DRM or watermarking or anything on it, WotC can trust it's public to be honest and not share the 5 meg file with anyone. Hell, they didn't even password protect the file. <sigh> |

Wizards actually did this in response to a request from me. Many publishers today make electronic copies of some of their novels available for free download (cruise over to Tor or Baen Books; both offer a large number of books for free download). I'm pleased to see WotC dip its toe in the water.
Understand that the point isn't to discourage distribution by tacking on DRM or something similar. Exactly the opposite. The point is to encourage distribution. As far as I'm concerned (and this is in no way the official stance of WotC), I hope this pdf shows up on every torrent site all over the internet. I want people to download it, mail it to each other, and, ultimately, read it.
As far as how this may affect sales, that remains to be seen. I think this is a bit of a test case in that regard (though again, this is just my opinion; I don't know exactly what WotC may be thinking). Some publishers have experienced increased sales in the print version of a novel that the publisher made available electronically. Don't know if it will happen here (I think its somewhat unlikely), but it'll be interesting to watch.
Anyway, I hope you'll pull it down and send it along to someone who might enjoy a sword and sorcery tale in the Realms. |

I just read on your blog (here) that you had proposed the idea to Wizards 12 months ago. I hope my post above didn't come off as too snarky. As a webmaster, I tend to lean towards some security vs. no security (I like how most of DriveThruRPG's files are secured on download), in the interest of protecting the original document from unauthorized editing and such. |

Not snarky at all. I just wanted to make it clear that I want this thing to get downloaded, distributed, and re-distributed.

Seeing that it is a Paul Kemp novel, then I believe it will increase sales as people will see just how great the writing is  |

while PDF books are certainly convenient for when i'm at work or something, they can never replace a solid bound book for me. so even when i can get PDF books for free (and you can get them everywhere), i'll still want the actual book as well, since i do most of my reading away from the computer.
and even if i did almost all of my reading at work on the computer, i'd STILL want the actual book at home on my bookshelf. |
