Whilst searching the shelves of my local reseller, I came across Cormyr in hardback for $4.98!
Needless to say. I grabbed it. I was unaware it was ever released as a hardback. Makes me wonder which other realms books are floating around in hardback.
Anyone else come across any realms novels unexpectedly?

| Sometime around a month ago, I found books 7&8 of the Double Diamond Triangle Saga, in new condition except for some page discoloration and dust, at cover price in a local gaming shop. I found a copy of The Magehound there as well. None of these was an unknown printing, but I was surprised and happy from those finds! |

I found a new copy of Temple Hill in a bookstore in Orlando, long after it was out of print and difficult to find...
And it took me a long time to get a hold of the Double Diamond books... I tried for years to get them, and kept getting outbid. And then I found the entire set on eBay, with a Buy It Now price of only $20! I was all over that one, very quickly. ^^ |

Excellent find RW. I picked this up as a hardback. Remains one of my collection favorites to this day. |

I've had a couple of encounters. One of the most memorable was finding an abandoned copy of All Shadows Fled at one of my former work-places. I knew the lovely lady who'd previously owned the book, and we often chatted semi-regularly about the Realms. But when she got a promotion and was moved to another part of the state, she left most of her reading material behind -- which included a variety of novels covering a selection of genres.
Anyways, I quickly contacted said Lady after making the discovery in her vacated office. I asked her whether she wanted me to mail the books to her new workplace, but she declined. Her reasons for doing so were certainly understandable. With her recent move, she hadn't quite settled yet, and didn't have the room for boxes of books. So, in the end, I offered to give them a "good home" and she agreed.
And it was a remarkable opportunity for me anyway, since I'd lost my own copy of All Shadows Fled shortly after the Lady K and I moved-in together. So I was ecstatic for the chance to replace that book -- since it's actually quite rare and hard to find here.

Do not try to understand the 4th edition. Thats impossible. Instead...only try to realise the truth. There is no 4th edition. |

| Next to Cormyr was all 5 Darksun Prism Pentad novels for $12, I like Troy Denning so I grabbed those as well....can anybody tell me anything about them? I have not read anything from Darksun. |

Well, Dark Sun is waaaayy different from any other fantasy setting I know of. Mostly desert, lots of psionics... Essentially, the books focus on a fight to first gain freedom, and then to retain it.
Troy Denning has been, for me, a hit-or-miss author. I've really enjoyed some of his books. Others, I've hated. I really enjoyed the Prism Pentad. |

To expand a little on Wooly's earlier reply... Here's the eight things you need to know about DARK SUN:-
1. Magic is forbidden on Athas, because casting spells requires the caster to suck the life energy from plants and even other living creatures.
2. Psionics replaces magic as the dominant supernatural power in Athas
3. Most of the campaign world is desert, having been laid to waste by 'defilers.' Defilers are wizards who care not for the destruction their spellcasting causes.
4. Cities are often large and ran by a powerful god-like defiler/psion called a Sorcerer King.
5. Dragons are rare on Athas because they're actually transformed Sorcerer Kings. A Sorcerer King goes through a painful transformation to become the terror of Athas: The Athasian Dragon.
6. Athas's sun isn't black, its a red giant.
7. Athas has a lot of lizard and bug-like races such as the Thri-kreen (which look like huge preying mantis).
8. Very few actual mammal creatures. Most are giant insects and huge lizards.

| The Prism Pentad was fantastic! I never played the Dark Sun setting, but i enjoyed almost all of the novels from that line. Think there was 13 of them i believe? |

Yup, thirteen novels. The Prism Pentad, the Tribe of One, and the Chronicles of Athas. I've read the Prism Pentad and one of the Chronicles (the one that followed the short story that was in Dragon).
I actually lucked out and got the entire run of Dark Sun novels from eBay, in two lots from one seller. They were selling a buttload of books, mostly Realms, but with the Dark Sun books mixed in. I went for the auctions for the FR books, but the DS ones were a nice bonus. |

Yup, thirteen novels. The Prism Pentad, the Tribe of One, and the Chronicles of Athas. I've read the Prism Pentad and one of the Chronicles (the one that followed the short story that was in Dragon).
There were actually other novels planned for the line, as I recall... but they never saw publication. Some of the material from those books though, was included in several of the last sources launched for the line.
Oh, and the "Prism Pentad" is currently being re-printed by Wizards.

I managed to purchase most of the DARK SUN books when they were initially released. I was curious about the setting when I first heard about it, and made a promise to pick up the novels and campaign books just as soon as they started being released.
Needless to say, it's a decision I've never regretted.

| I found Cormyr in hardback for $7(AU), and my first realms book was Legacy of the Drow hardcover which I think I found for &7.50, both of them from a nearby second hand bookshop that quickly ran out of realms books. Still hunting the final book in the Spelljammer series. |

I may be able to help you with that, Thielan. I know of a few book stores around the the country that still stock most of the SJ novels as second-hand copies.

Quite alot of the realms novels have seen hardback release over the years. My FLBS, (before the borg-like Waterstones opened and put it out of business,) always used to carry FR hardbacks. In fact, I picked up the aforementioned Cormyr from there. I also got hold of most of the Elminster Series (up to in Hell) and several of the post DET Drizzt novels.
There were more I didn't pick up, perfering the cheaper paperbacks even if it meant waiting, (it saved on shelf space. Important when you've got nearly two hundred FR novels.  ) |
