I'm not a RPG specialist but I just can confirm that other players (like Green Giant in Wizards threads) use this character/NPC with those such Archmage levels.
I'm not a player. So, Ifthir, what is the matter with that Archmage levels ?

Page 41 of the Forgotten Realms campaign sourcebook defines this as a 5 level Prestige Class. Unless I am mistaken, Illis is the only NPC in Forgotten Realms 3X canon with more than 5 levels.
I've re-read the Green Giant NPC thread and indeed, this character is described as a 5th lvl Archmage "only". Must indeed be a typo. Sorry but I'm not able to confirm that...

Underdark states he is sorc 4/wiz 20/archmage 6, which makes him a lvl 30 character. Maybe this is the explanation for the "6" levels of archmage: they wanted give him a character level of 30.

So, if they really wanted to create a lvl 30 character, why did they not make him a sorc 5 or a wiz 21 instead of changing the Archmage prestige class rules ?
