Hi... this is just for chatting! Nothing too serius or even racist!

What do you think about the immigration of shou people in the Realms?

I hate it! But maybe someone can help me to change my opinion!

I always found that FR setting is more like an "American Far West" transposed in Medieval Fantasy than an "European Medieval Fantasy" world.
(Elves = Native Indians, driven from their ancestral homelands by humans... A LOT of caravans to be protected from bandits... Wild frontiers to be tamed... Towns without law, waiting for wandering heroes... Towns in the wild without walls!)

This vision perhaps changed over the years.
And now returned with the arrival of Shou, a LOT of Shou! (They even had a nation in the middle of nowhere!)

Maybe Wotc is planning a railroad building from Westgate to Waterdeep via Baldur's Gate?

Or maybe it is that in every Post-Apocalyptic world there must be chinese people around (From BladeRunner / CyberPunk on... )

The changes to the realms are brought on by what is popular in our world now (e.g. WoW)....another thing that is quite popular is all the Jet Li/Jackie Chan movies, and movies with the Yakuza in America are regular now (see recent Jet Li/Jason Statham movie)

There's still novels to be published...

No matter where you go, there you are.

I'm not into the 4E Realms to begin with (if that's what you are talking about), but in my opinion, some immigration makes sense. It doesn't mean all such immigrants should be gangsters or martial artists, though.

Dear Rinonalyrna,
I noticed this from your previous posts around the forums. I try to be as positive as possible about the new realms, hoping to save something but, the more I read the FRCS and FRPG the more I became disappointed. 100 years jump and no logical in game explanation for major events... But I don't want to rant here

Agreed...
SOME immigration... In Thesk it will be perfectly logic... Even some in Westgate... BUT in LUSKAN there are gangs of yakuza fighting!!

[SARCASTIC MODE ON]
And... a Shou not gangster or martial artist? Useless ... Unless you need Spring Rolls

Understandable.

That is awfully far off, especially in a world that's supposed to be "points of light" (ie. travel is dangerous).

So I wonder if there will be the 4E Oriental Adventures book which would now be fully compatible with Faerun!!!

Actually, there's been pretty active immigration, especially in the Unapproachable East, ever since the Tuigan Horde came through. So, it's pretty natural in areas in the Northeast to see gangsters in the area (think asian immigration in San Francisco in the late 1800's or italian/irish immigration in New York in the early 1900's).

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Good question...

... maybe to be politically correct they will put some Chondatan/Damaran/illuskan enclave there

More seriously... I prefer to remember Hengeyokais as a race full of mystery than to see another damage-making oriented race.
Really... why go "Oriental" if we have our share of Shou creature/deities and martial artists in Nathlan. You don't have to travel that far... just 300 miles south of Westgate (10 days, riding a Trihorn Behemoth! * Adv. Valut, page 11 ) to enter a world full of jumping/kicking KI-boosted guys!

Exactly... late 1800 - early 1900... not medieval time, even fantasy one.
My theory about FR - FarWest is still intact.

I have a whole 'Kill Bill' style sub-plot going on in the Unapproachable East, complete with O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Lui) and her Crazy 88's.

I'm guessing... what's wrong in Shou Lung to make people emigrate?
Because 1381 DR is the Year of the starving? Or there is an official explanation for this mass movement of people?

Famine? But only in the East... Otherwise also western people should have started emigrating...
Maybe the spell plague is a pest for rice! But the grain, thanks Chauntea, resisted! The price for it was Yondalla, but in the long run...

The Celestial Bureacracy is destroyed/incapacitated by the chaos after spell plague? The Shuo Lung social system is then damaged and the ensuing disorder make people abandon their homeland... Maybe...

Absolutely. the immigration has been taking place for some time in written realms sources, at least back to 2E. 4E did not do this my friends.
