Having spent a year living in Virginia Beach, VA (which is 15 miles from Norfolk, VA; where USACOM (United States Atlantic Command) commands the entire Atlantic fleet of the Navy), and meeting a LOT of servicemen in the area, it was fun to find out that a large portion of the Navy played D&D regularly on the boats during their downtime. |
I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Dude, I am a decorated veteran myself. I know tons of soldiers that played D&D with me and others. In fact my friend that accompanied me to GENCON 2008 is a decorated veteran too! Without getting too much into my military career suffice it to say that the Forgotten Realms has a large following in the ranks of the military. |

12 years in the Army, every duty station I found myself in had folks who played D&D or RPG computer games of one sort or another. especially while deployed, on down time, when we had down time that is a game would usually evolve at some point. |

Wow. It is rather sad he said people that play D&D are not patriotic. I served in the Army for five years and I played with a total of over 25 different people at any one time. All of them also in the military, some who never played it before and found out what it was like. Dungeons and Dragons was a way to pass the time and get together between the endless hours of deployments to Kuwait, Iraq, Kosovo and wherever else our travels took us. We loved playing the Realms especially, and would try to play whenever we could spare the time.
I also spent time in VA Beach for awhile Ashe. I was stationed in Ft Story. Loved the area and never had any problem finding someone to play a game of D&D. |

Much props to all of you who served. I love that D&D can't be used as a tool for politics anymore. And shame on the Republican who just made the fool of himself. |

*groan* I need to read into this more. It would be a poor choice of words if this is indeed true.
I am a combat-wounded veteran (May, 2005) and I live in the D.C. area. I have a lot of callous to political controversies, so try not to take my post the wrong way :D

This might be the same story Elaine posted on her journal the other day, and she has a link to the post, which is:

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Fellow scribes, we're wandering dangerously close to some of the guidelines about forbidden topics referenced in the Code of Conduct.
Let's just keep that in mind as we continue this discussion. |

That would be poorly thought out, given that back in the day it seemed that pretty much everybody in a uniform was playing D&D, especially in the Navy and Air Force. |

To refocus this on Realms matters...
I am I the only one who noticed that according to Ed's Dwarves Deep that Barak means strong in Dwarven? LOL.
I had a local politician decry DnD when I was about 8 years old (early 80s at the height of anti-DnD hysteria). Fortunately, I did not heed his advice. My first grade teacher was a wonderful woman who played DnD and encourages us all to be creative and independent.

It sounds like they need a soft target to hit in order to avoid talking about real issues.
The strange thing is when you put aside the fantasy elements many corporations and institutions use role-play for training purposes. I should imagine having soldiers play a game that gets them to think about tactics and effective ways to achieve a goal would be a good thing. |

I read this differently, more like a smear against stereotypical nerds.
The original author has apologised, in quite an amusing way (http://ace.new.mu.nu/apology_from_mccains_campaign_blogger):
"If my comments caused any harm or hurt to the hard working Americans who play Dungeons & Dragons, I apologize. This campaign is committed to increasing the strength, constitution, dexterity, intelligence, wisdom, and charisma scores of every American..." |
