Hells, for that matter, I'm doubting all that many folks over there that would object to that term are actually reading US fiction, especially Realms fiction.

I think this is key. I also think that there's no need for writers to concern themselves with how their words will be seen overseas. If someone is looking to take offence, they'll find something, no matter what our fiction writers do.

May the fantasy authors of the world let their creativity flow!

I would have to agree that creating more Faerûninan-sounding terminology would have been nice, but words like 'Crusade' and 'Jihad' evoke certain images, and the authors are using that to their advantage (and not just in FR).

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the parallel between the Jihad and the Shattered Realms. I used to love Battletech, and I believe that the catastrophic jump forward in the Battletech universe ruined the setting and killed the game commercially as well. I feel like the same thing has been done to the Realms, and I think it will have the same outcome. The whole thing just makes me sick.

Nonsense, the Master died in the Doctor's arms at the end of series three!
Actually, I meant that Shar was really the Master of the Word of Blake [and thus the entity responsible for the Jihad/Spellplague], since his/her/it's identity was the topic of much speculation for such a long time in Classic BattleTech.

But your reference works just as well. Though maybe it was Shar's hand, [rather than the Rani's], that was reaching for the Master's ring at the end of The Last of the Time Lords.

Intimate with Wooly? That really scares me.

But I do tend to agree with what you said earlier. The relative size of the community here at Candlekeep has definitely helped to foster closer relationships between certain scribes. I'm not saying this isn't the case at WotC, because I've made friends with posters over there too. But, here, well... it just feels like a group of friends sitting in some private room full of Realms books, around a big table and chatting away about the world which we all love. It's almost like some exclusive club!

"Nobody listens to the Ranger!"

Our groups are all sticking with 3.X classic Realms.

I don't attack other posters, nor use 'hate Speech' (which I'm taking to mean racism and the like), and I don't know anyone's private info, so it sure as hell wasn't that.

Definately 'Inflamatory remarks'.

Hate speech is a bad thing. Racism is a bad thing. Dungeons & Dragon 4.New.Coke is not racist. Anyone who thinks that the following quotes about Chult from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide are racist, is a racist:

quote:
Human civilization is virtually nonexistent here, though an Amnian colony and a port sponsored by Baldur’s Gate cling to the northern coasts, and a few tribes—some noble savages, others depraved cannibals—roam the interior.

quote:
Principal factions in Chult now include the yuan-ti survivors of Serpentes (mostly in the east), the spellscarred of Samarach, savage tribes (mostly in the northwest), human-run strongholds along the northern coast, and strange creatures from across the Trackless Sea that have begun to colonize the Mistcliffs.

Anyone who think that it's hate speech to call the only black-skinned human race on Toril "savages" and "cannibals" or who denies that they have benefited from a colony of White imperialists in their miserable jungle is a hater. Savage, black-skinned cannibals always benefit from the kindly guidance of White traders and merchants. (The savage, black-skinned Chultan cannibals should not be confused with the evil, black-skinned elves, who live under Toril. It's okay to hate their race, since the elf gods do, too, and they aren't human, anyway.)

YOU, Markustay, must have posted something hateful or racist on the Wizards boards. Did you post quotes from their chapter on Maztica? Or from their chapter on Kara-Tur? Or did you have the temerity to (falsely!) claim that the entire original concept and the entire description of the "brain fluke" and its placement in the "Africa" of the Forgotten Realms was (allegedly) stolen from the short story "The Earwig" (or the "Night Gallery" film of the same title)? Mattel just won a hundred million dollar judgment because the idea for Bratz was developed on their dime; Hasbro may not want to fork over millions of bucks to Universal if they get sued for stealing being inspired by "The Earwig," so anyone who suggests that Hasbro has done anything shady, such as stealing intellectual property without crediting its creators or paying them royalties is definitely going to be smacked down. Did you do that, Markustay? That's bad, m'kay?

-Wow that was intense!

-Here it was I was going to comment on the Shattered Realms. Yet when a Moderator uses it I guess it's condoned around here. I wonder what kinda example that gives to a new poster that is checking this place out due to the 4E Realms? I quit posting at the WotC forums today because of the Threadpooping. I don't want to have to do that here too.

I coined that phrase, because in my opinion, the Realms of 4E bears only the most superficial resemblance to any prior version, and is really more of a new setting. I'm just one person, though. Plenty of people here have embraced the Realms of 4E. We are edition-neutral, so please don't feel you have to leave because I get opinionated on this one.
