is dead.

I didn't know him personally, but I've met Ernie, his son. I wish I could convey my grief to him and his family.

Without Gary Gygax and his ideas and vision our hobby might not even exist at all. I wish I could've told him how much I enjoyed his two Greyhawk books...and Unearthed Arcana.

Fare thee well...

Really... sad news. Farewell, Mr. Gygax, and know that everytime that a character look to an imaginary sky, your face will be in there, among the stars.

/Salute Mr. Gygax.

We as a community owe him beyond measure for unleashing our imaginations upon us. May he eternally wonder Castle Greyhawk and find surprises in each room he enters.

I feel lucky to have met and spoke with him on two occasions and corresponded with him a handful of times.

His presence in our community will always be missed.

Bloody hell! And right after the D&D Experience lauding WotC's 4th edition of his game. Weird. It is kinda weird, I too have never met the man, but I feel as if I lost someone close to me.

Wow, that sucks. :( Sigh.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

May he RIP. Good man and I appreciate his work on developing the game we've come to love and enjoy after so many years. I envy his place in the history books.

It's...a strange coincidence. Just as 4E elminated a lot of things "Gygaxian", we now lose the founder himself. It's really sad. I really hope this isn't a bad omen. (yeah, I'm a sucker for omens)

I was hoping to hear his views on 4th Edition when it came out.

I just want to say, if it weren't for Gary Gygax, I'd have never met my best friend and the many awesome friends after him, I'd have never met my wife, and I'd probably be dead in some streetcorner after a gun fight or ODed on drugs (long story)

Farewell, Mr. Gygax

EDIT: I didn't meet them directly because of him, of course, but indirectly through D&D and roleplaying I've been able to meet such people and turn my life around for the better.

The last game system that was wholly his was the Vancian one, and with that gone, D&D was no longer truly his creation any more.

Yes, I hear they can and it's happened on more than one occassion. It, of course, happens to the elderly (never heard of any case where younger people died of heartbreak) as it seems they just lose their will to live after something traumatic occurs. Even animals can, like ferrets, who grow depressed and sometimes move on after losing their cage mate or some parrots who lose their owner since they outlive them.

I have heard, on many occassions, that once an elder retires from something big and momentous in their lives, they move on when it's over. And it leads to them passing on to the next world. My wife was one of the people that told this to me, when Peter Boyle, who played Frank on Everybody Loves Raymond, passed away. When the show moved on, he seemed to as well.

It's not immediate, of course, but it's not too much longer after.

I sent a copy of the AP obituary to BBC and asked them to start a "Have Your Say" memorial page for him, as they sometimes do for important people. If anyone else would like to throw in their tuppence, they might send comments to their "What do you want to talk about?" page.

I agree his visit to us was far to brief,

but I am eternally grateful for what he gave us while he was here.

I was fortunate enough to meet Gary once (actually wearing the floral shirt that's in his wikipedia picture, which might have been taken the same day).

He shall be missed.

And I can just see him with this little devilish grin as he nat-20's some angel's PC, eh?

It must be over a year since I posted but when I saw this sad news I had to come over and see what was being said.

As someone that has played D&D in all its forms since pre-first edition (the little A5 notebooks), I've spent an awful long time immersed in the world this guy created. What would I have been doing without him?

My 2 sons were brought up on D&D almost for as long as they have been able to speak.

I had the honour to meet Gary a good few years ago and that day has stuck with me ever since. A sad day indeed.

Causes haven't been announced, but he'd suffered several strokes, a heart attack, and an abdominal ulcer - so it's likely his body simply shut down.

Mr. Gygax has changed so many lives. It is a sad thing to see him go.

And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood

I Yim'ed the news link to a friend of mine, and he too said I wonder if 4E was the cause. I have been playing for probably 20 years now (+/- 1-2) and I everytime I see the cover of the Basic Rules Set 1, I get wispy.

Gary was a pivotal player in the progression of fantasy in my opinion.

Thanks dude. You done great!

Thanks, PaulBestwick. I have left a comment. And, for the record, I do blame Hasbro for breaking Gary Gygax's spirit and rushing him to a premature death. Just last week I wrote to one of my players and told her that I had seen the advance work-ups for the 4.$$$$$$$ "Rogue" (or whatever they will call it), and told her that 4.$$$$$$$ had ceased to be REAL Dungeons & Dragons, bearing no relationship to the original game and its intentions, only retaining the funny dice (because dice manufacturers buy advertising space).

Those interested in deaths by broken heart would do well to consult the Essays of Michel de Montaigne. I don't have a copy at hand and can't give you the appropriate essay title, but -- nu -- wander around in his writings; it's good for the soul.

Truly a sad day for gamers all, and across the generations... one of the legendary "First Ones" has passed on.

Farewell to the Great Man of Gaming -- for though many of us may never have had the opportunity to meet, you were an inspiration to us all.

Good journey... And Gary, just for you, I'll have my new cleric PC carry her "+2 Mace" into battle tonight, and she'll be screaming your name.
