Causes haven't been announced, but he'd suffered several strokes, a heart attack, and an abdominal ulcer - so it's likely his body simply shut down.
How sad. He wasn't really that old, IMO. |

I will do a homage to Gary the next day that I sit behind the screen (I don´t know how, but I´m thinking in something - due to the fact that the group is climbing Umbergoth to talk with Nartheling, I think that will not to be much dificult to create something "Gary-centered").
P.S.: someone said at ENWorld that the 4th Edition will be dedicated to Mr. Gygax. Nice and touching. |

My oh my. What sad news. The dedication is a nice touch. And to Mr.Pipps, I had the exact same thought the moment I read this. |

This even made the front page of Yahoo news for awhile. You know you had some influence on people when you show up as front page news online. CNN also reported it.
And btw, it still sucks. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

His messenger has come. Gary left with him. May he rest in peace, and may we all carry his dreams forward.

The second GenCon in Wisconsin that I attended, I was eating dinner in the Hilton with my chums when Gary and his wife took a table across from us. It took all we had to ignore him (we giggled like school girls and snuck looks a lot). After dinner, we went over and politely butted in just to say 'thanks for the game and all you do for the industry' when his wife said "hey, have a seat and chat a bit" well, we were flabbergasted. We sat briefly and chatted and I must say that I shall cherish that forever.
I will miss the man, what he did in his life, and what he did for my teenage years in the 70's, keeping me out of trouble and killing orcs.

Wooly, I just read that before checking this thread before bed. I think he did Gary proud with that. His words on the News page are also quite touching.

May Mr. Gygax be cryogenically frozen and brought back to life in the year 3007. A moment for the grandfather of all RPG from pen and paper to MMORPG. . . . . . PS: (The above mention is in relation to his guest spot in Futurama, which also proves he will exists after the universe ends. With Al Gore, Uhura and Steven Hawkings.) |

I have not played D&D in years; the last time I played, the Skill & Powers books were still new... The last character I played was a minotaur, using The Complete Book of Humanoids.
And though I have some writing ability, the gods know I am not eloquent.
So I just did the only tribute I could. I pulled out my character dice, and rolled up a couple sets of stats. I have no idea what I'm going to do with them, but I could think of nothing more fitting.
Rest well, Mr. Gygax. |

Two of my players have suggested a moment of prayer/silence in Gygax's honor before we start the weekly game. I agree. I can also speculate as to what the dwarven fighter's new battlecry might be. |

That is truly sad to hear, indeed. I'm sure a lot of fans will be saddened to hear this. He's influenced the lives of so many people, mine included.
My sincerest condolences go out to all his friends and family.
P.S.: Another big, sad, unwanted and unasked for change in 2008 that I'll bare not lightly...

If I am able to touch a small fraction of the lives in a positive way that Mr. Gygax did then I will consider it a life lived well. He was truely a Titan amoung men, may all his attributes come up natural 18's in his next life.

This guy was legend even when he was still with us. Now, every time you meet a drow, mind the fact that they are his brainchild.

I had the same exact thought. While already immortal in our minds, and the tribute of 4e is a wonderful jesture on the part of WotC (proving they are just misguided, not completely heartless), I would LOVE to see a Gygax god perminently installed in the game, in name, specifically. Greenwood, Weis, Hickman, Salvatore, countless more writers outside of D&D based novels, Fantasy Movie/TV Producers (Krall, Conan, Beastmaster, LotR etc), Fantasy Video Game MFGs, PnP offshoots and all the fans who have enjoyed or will enjoy these things past, present and future owe a huge debt of gratitude and respect to this man. In my mind, he was an INTEGRAL cog in the fantasy machine. If he didn't pursue D&D, all of the aforementioned items either would not have existed or not been as successful as they are today.
I'm sure many of you had the same thoughts, as you are all a highly educated bunch, but I just feel compelled to express it.
Two men who have brought so much joy to my life passed away within the last 7 days. Myron Cope and Gary Gygax. I'll wave my old, ratty, 70's era Terrible Towel in one hand while rolling up a character, (3d6 straight, no rerolls) in the other. heh.. :( Sad week... but such is the cycle of life.
I wonder who will be the next inspriation in the minds of kids?

I wrote this after learning about his passing this morning. My own Hommage if you will
OH GARY BOY Sung to "Oh Danny Boy" Inspired by KODT and OoTS New Lyrics by Robert L
Oh Gary Boy, The Dice, The Dice are rollin' From round to round, On all our PC's Sheets. The turn is done, and victory is ours now. 'Tis you, 'tis you that made this game so sweet.
But now your gone, no Raise Dead spell could help us To the Seven Heavens we know that you did go We hoist our bags and books that were your passion Oh Gary Boy, Oh Gary Boy, We love you so.
But you return, where gamers are a gatherin' At many cons and gaming stores we meet We're making saves, or rollin' up a character We'll make new friends, and old ones once more greet
So rest ye well, your legacy enduring May all your crits now warm and sweeter be We'll gather round, that table every weekend. We will keep gamin' till we come to game with thee.
We will keep gamin' till we come to game with thee.

Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.
I began roleplaying in 1992 at the age of twelve. By this time Gary, Dave, Ed, and even our esteemed Lady Herald had been playing in excess of ten to fifteen years. Others join them, among the first of the brave adventurers, the knights of the dinner table, regularly putting aside their daily work as librarians, shoe repairmen, lawyers, and other work to invest themselves in the creation of something no one had previously imagined in such detail. I came to this game with an open mind which was severely under-stimulated by the rote-study emphasis of the educational curriculum, and it gave me a sense of wonder and creativity which I have been able to apply to my academic studies as an adult. In a lateral kind of way, I would not be an anthropologist - able to appreciate the diversity and creativity of many ethnicities and cultures - without first having been able to appreciate the ingenuity of imaginary worlds.
I had corresponded with Gary several times; always to ask a question (something for which I'm known) or to beg incisive review of some bit of plot I'd been constructing. Gary never once failed to respond to an e-mail, nor did his words ever fail to sway me, or to enlighten my perspective. I have many times considered visiting him at his home, or approaching him at GenCON (which I have attended several times), but always favored distance and quiet appreciation. I excused this by way of feeling that I did not wish to disturb him at home, nor did I want to add to the rush of fans who would bombard him at events. I look back now with the sincere ache of not having once shaken the man's hand, and at not having taken the time to truly thank him for the contributions he has made. I only hope that Ed and Dave will be so good to let me visit once, if even to share with them some "Monk's Blend" tea and some of my grandmother's recipe lemon bread.
I would like to say to Gary, posthumously, the following:
Thank you, sir. You will be missed.
Edit:The above poem is titled "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" and is the property of the estate of Robert Frost, used on good honor merit without permission by the above.

I've been playing RPGs since I was 14 or 15, I can't really remember that well, but it has been more than 2 decades, thus about 2 thirds of my life, aside from reading, I haven't done anything with such a dedication. Gary's and Dave Arneson's ideas, and later Gary's vision probably had more impact on my life than anything else. I never got the chance to tell him this in person, and by the time you come to realise something like this it is, usually, too late. |

Ah, EGG... Sad, sad news indeed. From every single-classed fighter with Strength 9 to every dark-elf/half-demon paladin/Archmage/grand druid/master ninja with a sword +20, god slayer - So long, and thanks for all the good times you helped to create.

Part of what is best in the world died. Not to be melodramatic, but Dungeons & Dragons changed my life. Because of Gary Gygax, I was a D&D nerd and while this kept me from knowing the intimate embrace of a woman for many years, I was very happy and content. I miss the days of total irresponsibility, marathon gaming with good friends in the basement and thinking of nothing but new dungeons, campaign ideas and character concepts. I literally wept while I read about this at my computer at work. I never met the man in person, but I still play his version of AD&D like a good fanatic and will accept only a few minor house rules and alterations from the old Second Edition to my campaign. While I may now adventure in the Realms, I know that once in awhile, I will pass a familiar place and think fondly of the man who got me here. And while I may have never personally known him, I find that I miss him already.
God bless Gary Gygax!

It's a strange week. First, at Monday Jeff Healey died, then Gary has passed away and today one of the greatest polish actors Gustav Holoubek died :( It's very sad indeed. I fell like orphan... but I want to thank you Mr Gygax, you made me so happy for over 10 last years. We will miss you Mr Gygax. |
