As a longtime follower of the TELP series of Message Forums for New Worlds products (Might & Magic franchise in particular), I don't feel as comfortable with the Producer-sponsored Message Forums. Following a long dry spell when I would keep buying this or that computer game but then fail to sustain interest more than just a few evenings, I finally started playing Neverwinter Nights, the single player game and got hooked well and truly.

I'm looking for referrals to private message forums where I could find a lot of NWN players swapping hints and stories about their play, and would hope to find that the messagers include at least a few mature adults who don't mangle the poor English language into something unreadable like the kiddies have brought with them from their Mirc and other Chat Lines.

Am I out of luck?

I am not sure whether such a forum exists on the web (it would be quite interesting), but what I do know is, that if you are looking for discussion on hints and gameplay about NWN, I am sure that if you ask here in this very forum there will be more than enough fellow gamers ready to contribute to such a discussion (myself included).

And, as a side-note, if you are a fellow devotee of FR and NWN you might want to check out this thread http://www.candlekeep.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=888. There's some great stuff happening there that you may be interested in.

Good learning...

I am a great fan of the NWN though not because of the single player campaign, but because of the multiplayer aspect of it. I don't have a good deal of creativity so I largely leave the toolset alone. Anyway my preferred character in NWN is a female human cleric with a greatsword and plate mail. Not a true paladin but every inch looking like a knight in shining armor who just happens to throw chain lightning around (air domain).

Actually, I have been using a male Dwarven Monk, for my latest run through of the game. It's very interesting because it gives me a chance to play a character race I have never role-played, even though it is a CRPG.

And also, the toolset is one of the best aspects of the game. It was actually one of the underlying reasons for my purchasing of the game, originally.

Never having attempted a multiplayer arrangement, and unwilling to PAY to play on any setup like Elfquest, I'm not sure how using that part of the game will go. I also don't claim any surfeit of imagination; leastwise insufficient to handle dialogue in fiction writing. But I definitely am attracted to the creation of my own modules.

Over the many years since my kids brought some D&D material home, before we were aware that there was a version called AD&D, I've never had the pleasure of a PnP RPG session with a few people in my own age group. When the genre was being invented, there were plenty who would be my age had they stuck around, but they didn't.

So I've played the CRPG's instead. From CotAB and BT-I onward. I've liked my Sorcerors & Wizards, but Knights were closer to my heart. In NWN now, I've started a pair of Fighters in parallel sets of game runs. Both are at least partly Tanks for the front rank (and I miss the availability of a couple more henchmen in NWN). One is dual class with a couple of Rogue levels for leavening. He's the most fun so far but is not getting along at all well with Grimgnaw. The other is similar, but using the Bard class for interest.

I'll play through the single player "Official Game" game a couple of times first (I hope it remains fun at least a couple of times through), then look for a host game to join somewhere. Right now, I am near the end of Chapter 1, and reluctantly wandering over lots of already-covered territory with Grimgnaw in tow. I wasn't sure I had his fetish item yet (and seemingly did not). Asked about it on the wrong official forum and then went to the spoiler forum.

I had thought I wanted an engraved ring, dark in color, maybe black iron. But I found a banded, ribbed-looking item instead, identified as being a silver ring. So if I've found it, now I'm trying to get Grimgnaw to tell me he wants it. But he's reluctant, and my main guy doesn't do the political thing well. My other character, with more skill in Persuade, has gotten further with this Dwarf in less time, but is involved in an earlier stage of play than the No Mans Land.

To Kiwi,

You don't have to pay anything to play NWN on the network. Just click on Multiplayer, create a username in Gamespy and you can play to your heart's content. Most servers do not allow you to use your character in your Single Player Campaign but instead allows you to create your own player in their persistent world server, storing your character in the server vault.
