Ok, heres what just popped in my mind:
In the Realms of Aber-Toril, is there coffee? If not, why not? If so, where do they grow?

Ed answered this 6th march 2005. South of Durpar and Maztica are the major sources. |

Zakhara also has some since they have a coffee ceremony. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I recall answering this pretty extensively in Ed's scroll at the beginning of the year... so I'll re-post that answer here:-
The Bedine cultivate coffee crops, given that it is considered their favorite drink -- hot salted-coffee. They also make use of rubbed coffee-grounds for dye. Coffee is often served at the Fifth Nights function hosted by the Wizards Guild in Ravens Bluff. Coffee is grown in Semphar. Sweetened coffee is a popular beverage served in Duirtanal. Coffee is grown in Ulgarth. As well as in Durpar where it is that country's most profitable export. Shining South notes that coffee is popular in most southeastern lands of the Realms, and is becoming popular in other regions across the Realms as well.
Ed's also discussed coffee in the Realms in both his March 6, 2005 reply [as Jorkens noted above] and the August 4, 2005 reply.

As I recall, Elaine's short story "The Bargain" originally had Hasheth poisoning Danilo and Arilyn's coffee. In The Best of Elaine, though, this was changed to goldleaf tea. |

Interesting, looking at the FRCS map on trade routes and resources it lists coffee on the legend but I can't seem to find the picture on the map. That maps always bugged me as a side note, isn't the Western Heartlands sort of the bread basket of FR?
In the same line of question. Does anyone know of references to tobacco in the realms? The Trade Routes and Resources map lists it as coming out of Amn but I can't imagine pipeweed isn't produced in other areas of the Realms.
A resource map is a good idea but I get the feeling the one in FRCS is missing a lot that people of info. |

Though authorities in Zhentil Keep, Mulmaster, Thay, and Mintarn question such claims, Elminster states that tobacco is what's in his pipe. |

I can't imagine that Lurien (sp?) could NOT have the crop growing, as much as halflings smoke. |

After pouring through tons of old source books seems tobacco in the realms is a catch all for smokable weeds. And depending on the region you are prone to finding different types of pipeweeds growing. Many rumored to have medicinal purposes curing coughs and other ailments. Though most of it seemed to be short leafed plants as cigars are made from Maztican which would have larger leaves so as to be able to roll the cigar in the plants leaf.
Also found some game info most of the time it sold in bags that hold 15-20 uses and the bags sell anywhere between 2cp-2sp, I assume the more expensive stuff is coming from Amn/Tethyr or of course Maztica. Cigars can go for up to a few gold or a couple of silver depending on quality again. |
