What do you all think about the new Realms cosmology offered in the 3e FRCS? I'm still sticking with the old Planescape version, partly because of familiarity and partly because I think the new cosmology is lacking- where do baatezu, tanar'ri, and yugoloths live, after all? I noticed that the authors of the Sembia series still use the old version too. I've heard some say they favor the new version because the Planecape/Manual of the Planes version is too simple in configuration. Any thoughts on why you are/are not using the new version in your game?

I agree with you Formosus! I use the classic Cosmology because it is what I am used too. WHat I do use however is the REALMS cosmology as deity realms within that GREATER planes cosmology. Such as Bane's realm being part of Gehenna. And TYR despite being LAWFUL GOOD is actually part of ASGARD (Norse god of WAR and JUSTICE, FR god of Justice). The realms cosmology as presented I use as easy travel to the deities realms through gates only active from toril or the respective deities' realms.

Greetings,
I also agree with you Formosus.
I regularly run Planescape campaigns, so naturally the extension of that comsology usually stretches over to my FR games as well. I like to keep the entire multiverse pretty much the same in all the campaign game worlds I run, from Toril to Sigil to Krynn.
The reasons basically stem from the fact that, like mournblade94 said, it is a system that you are used to. Also, I find the 'new' cosmology to be far to generalised, and lacking in several important areas which are usually far too important in my campaigns to just ignore.
I enjoy the cosmology of the new Manual of the Planes, but only to an extent.
Good learning...

The 3e cosmology is, in my opinion, garbage. I too prefer to use the Planescape model. I like the idea of the other worlds connecting and having individuals from other worlds mixing throughout the planes. I am also a particular fan of Sigil, the Cage is one of my favorite cities, such a choatic, random, and all encompassing place. Plus, no gods muddling up the place. Not to mention it allows easy connection between Toril and Oerth and Krynn, all worlds I have played in.
I must agree with the comment made by Sage of Perth regarding the general nature of the new cosmology, yet another reason I liked Planescape, it was very unique. |
