one thing i noticed is the monitor i use determines if the globe works. it will not work with my dell flat panel set at 1280x1024 resolution, but it will work at 800x600 res. also it works 100% when plugged into my old crt monitor.

I've used it on CRTs and LCDs, at 800x600 and 1024x768.
I honestly don't see how the type of monitor would be a factor, and for me it's pushing it to think resolution would be. |

See now you all have me wanting to install it and find out. I just use the map tool from Core Rules and view the map files in it. :) |

Ok.. using Windows Vista Premium. Works fine, didn't even have to setup compatibility mode. I never really used the globe, it was cool but just found it easier to navigate video the map and the select an area to zoom in tool. |

Yup, no problems at all.
It occurs to me that the problem may be related to a combination of older installer programs and computers now having multiple drives. Back in the days that these programs were written, having drive D as the CD drive was pretty much a default thing, and installer programs didn't automatically figure out what the CD drive was, as they do now. So computers with something else as the D drive confuses them... Try typing in the correct drive designation, assuming it's not D, and see if that helps. |

My new work computer was wonky... For some reason that I can't figure out, it would periodically (often after hitting a site with Javascript) start acting really weird; in particular, it often acted like it was out of memory (despite not seeing anything hogging all the memory, and having a good amount of RAM).
Anyway, we wound up with a brand new Dell that we had no particular use for... So I swapped machines again.
I just installed the FR Atlas. And again, I've had no problems with it. The globe works, and the installation of all the patches went just fine. Interestingly, the installer did tell me to make sure I had the correct CD drive, since there are two on this machine (a built-in DVD, and a USB CD burner). |

Unfortunately, you'll have to pay thru the nose for it, unless you get lucky. People that have the software, like myself, know what they have and won't let go of it. Or they will let go of it, but ask for way too much money for it on eBay. |

I've had mine for years, but always wondered if there was a site hosting a patch or update to include the most recent 3.X/3.5 stuff... |

No, it's not been supported for a long time. You can still find the three updates on the Dungeon & Dragons Electronic Games Patches and Updates page, but the last one was done as a courtesy in 2001. |

Resurrecting a dead topic again...
I see that Brian was able to get his up and running on Vista, and that others have had essentially randomly distributed issues. I tried to reinstall mine after a few years on a nine-month-old XP system running Service Pack 3, and my installation locks up due to missing files. I'll try that trick with manually specifying the CD drive letter and see if that helps.

Updating a tenday later...
Nada. Nothing I do to tweak the install process allows it to proceed, and (as far as I know) there's no way to access the map files without installing the Atlas.
The Andy Rooney quote still applies. Why did I become a computer tech again? |

What I've found sometimes works (with other programs; I've never had an issue with the Atlas) is to copy the contents of the CD to the hard drive, and then install it from the hard drive. |

That's how I installed it on my Vista laptop. The only problem is that when I first open it, it gives me a message about putting the disk in. However, I'm still able to open the maps without problem. |
I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.
