I was reading through the questions with Erik Scott DeBie and saw that he lists a soundtrack for Ghostwalker and the upcoming Depths of Madness. He states that he either had certain songs in mind or was listening to certain songs while writing both novels. I think this is very interesting and a great way to set the mood or convey a character's mood and motivations. My question is do any other writer's do this? If so, what music did they have in mind for certain characters, scenes, novels. Also, if any readers have a playlist or soundtrack for their favorite realms novels, what are they and why?

The one that comes readily to my mind is Bob Dylan's beautiful, transcendant and grossly atypical pantheistic hymn "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" (a tad obscure, officially released only on Biograph -- if you watch Martin Scorcese's documentary No Direction Home, you'll find it over the end credits), which was an influence on my description of Grandfather Tree in Son of Thunder. |

Hmmmmmmmmmm, I'm not familiar with the song but I am three quarters of the way through Son of Thunder right now so I will look it up. By the way, excellent novel. I really like how you drop other realms happenings throughout. It helps to get a better view of the "big picture" going on in the realms. Many great characters,(too bad so many weren't around longer). Thank you for your reply and here's hoping we see many more realms novels in your future. |

Thanks for saying so, Koz. I was very keen on placing the novel within the Realms at all -- give the idea that impression was unfolding against a world that held so many others. |

I'm not a Realms author but I have written a novel. I often had music playing to help me write. I varied the music I played according to the situation. If my main characters were feeling melancholy or introspective I'd play Nick Drake or Jeff Buckley. If they were feeling energetic and happy I'd play Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin. If there was a mystical scene I'd play Loreena McKennitt. Generally, my main writing music was a classical radio station. |

Very interesting Kiaransalyn!!! Great choices for moods. I have often thought that Loreena Mckennitt's music would fit a druid very well. I can see all your choices helping with your writing process. Thank you for your input. |

koz: as a screenwriter myself (as well as short stories), I tend to listen to film scores. Nothing does more to convey mood for me than a piece of music created to bring a specific mood to visuals. Jerry Goldsmith has always been the very best at putting my muse into a specific mood to tell the story I am at the time writing. For exmaple, if I want to write a naturalistic story (i.e. one with druids and nature fol, etc...), I would probably have Goldsmith's score to LEGEND playing, as well as Tervor Jones' music to Excalibur. For a mood of wonder, awe and, perhaps, a little fear thrown in, Goldsmith's score to Star Trek The Motion Picture, oddly enough, fits every one of those moments. You can't go wrong with film music...(and songs don't work for me...I end up typing the lyrics...BLEH...) |

I wrote Frostfell to the accompaniment of healthy doses of:
The Dropkick Murphys The Ramones Willie Nelson Johnny Cash Maria McKee Garbage The Police The Band The Alarm
If Gyaidun had a theme song, it would have to be "The Gauntlet" by the Murphys.

Thank you SheriffJoe. You bring up some very good points. Any good film score should convey the mood to the accompanying story. I think the best use of music to set up a character or scene would have to be found in the story of Peter and the Wolf. Every character had there own theme and the music was as important as the story itself. As far as your using Star Trek the Motion Picture's score for wonder, awe and fear I wholeheartedly agree. I think the score conveys those moods very well. I mean when you are "boldly going where noone has gone before" you are going to be full of all three of those emotions. Great thoughts. I appreciate the feedback. Oh, and about typing the lyrics, I can understand how that would be easy to do. That would be pretty rough for a writer I guess. |

Thank you Mr. Sehestedt. I was able to get a very good feel for Frostfell from your list of artists. Very interesting choices. Not what one would normally expect from a fantasy author but it's great that inspiration can be gleamed from all sorts of music. I have only heard a little bit of the Dropkick Murphey's but thought their songwriting was outstanding. I am a long time Ramones fan though. Johnny Cash, now you are taking me back. He didn't just write songs, he told stories. I love the Police as well. Too bad they couldn't have gotten along better. In the short time they were together they put out some incredible music. I shall have to go out and find some of the music you listed to while I read Frostfell. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. |

Spoilers for Ghostwalker
Thank you to all the writer's who have shared their thoughts and comments thus far. I look forward to hearing from more of you and hearing your thoughts. How about all the Realms fans though? Has anyone had a song or piece of music that they were listening to while reading about the realms heighten their enjoyment of the novel? Or maybe while reading you thought that a certain song would fit perfectly with the scene? While reading Ghostwalker I found myself remembering Godsmack's "I Stand Alone" at the very end when Walker chooses to confront Gylther'yel by himself. Anybody else have any thoughts? |

Now THERE'S a neat one. I hadn't thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense. Walker was very much a dark-rock sort of fellow.
Though that line should probably have a SPOILERS line above it -- as it does sort of mention how the novel ends.
END SPOILERS
It is worth noting that sometimes song remind you of characters long after you last dealt with them. For instance, Stone Sour's Come Whatever May album only came out in 2006 -- two years after I wrote Ghostwalker -- but I can't hear their song "Reborn" without thinking about the character.
In reply to your other question, it's not particularly Realmsian, but I found that Gaiman's Sandman comics warrant a healthy accompaniment of A Perfect Circle. I read it all while listening to Thirteenth Step, and it was like crack. (Only more so.)

I heard the same thing! They're talking about doing a reunion/farewell tour later this year.
I'd love for them to put out a new album, as well, but I wouldn't put my hopes up. Last time they tried that, it broke up the band.
Andy Summers has a new book out that I've heard is quite a fun read, but I haven't had the chance to check it out myself.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!! I may actually have to watch the stupid Grammys this year:
The Police reunite for Grammys
1 hour, 56 minutes ago
The Police will reunite to open the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on February 11, The Recording Academy said on Tuesday, fueling speculation that the hit 1980s band is planning a reunion tour.
The five-time Grammy-winning band, led by frontman Sting, with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, split up in 1984 and was last seen playing together in 2003 to commemorate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The band, known for such hits as "Roxanne," "Message in a Bottle" and "Every Breath You Take," has never performed at the annual telecast for the music industry's most prestigious awards that are given by The Recording Academy.
"The Police join a stellar list of past Grammy Awards opening acts, which includes reunions and once-in-a-lifetime performances," said a statement from the academy.
Members of The Police have so far refused to confirm rumors that the band is planning to reunite in 2007 for dates in Britain and the United States, with this year marking the 30th anniversary of the release of "Roxanne."
Last month the band's label A&M Records, which is owned by Universal Music, said in a statement that they would mark the year somehow.
"It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalog of songs. Needless to say, everyone is hopeful the band will support our plans and while early discussions have taken place, nothing has been decided," said the statement.
Other presenters at the Grammy Awards include Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Christina Aguilera, Melissa Etheridge and Stevie Wonder.

You are absolutely right Erik. I have since edited my post so as not to ruin such a great book for anyone. I didn't think about it at the time but the "I stand alone" describes walker in general throughout the novel. My appologies for possibly ruining Ghostwalker for anyone. |

I take it everyone knows the Roxanne drinking game?
One side drinks when Sting sings 'Roxanne' and the other drinks when he sings 'Put out the red light.' It can get quite hectic at the end of the song. |

Thank you Mr. Byers for that great news!!!!! I never thought I would see a Police reunion. Here's hoping it actually happens. I have loved your work Realms and otherwise. The Rage was awesome and I can't wait for Unclean. From what I have heard it sounds very dark. |

I have heard of the game, Kiaransalyn, but the one I heard only involved drinking when Roxanne was said. That's quite the task as I remember counting Roxanne being said over 70 times if I remember right. |

When I got done reading The Erevis Cale Trilogy I new of a song that fit perfectly but couldn't remember the artist or title. Well I finally figured it out. A band called No Motiv had a song approprietly called Into the Darkness that fits Erevis Cale and the series almost perfectly. Here are the lryics so you can decide for yourself. Floating up I'm floating high up into the stars Below I feel it beneath me give away Echoes of the world dissolve This feels like a dream now
Then it calls And it feels so real And then light fades away
Darkness pulls me away I'm falling into nowhere I can't see anything I want it over now
Higher now I'm high above the stars light years away Alone this must be a dream now until I feel Terrified I'm falling fast down into the abyss The Void is calling me into somewhere else And it knows my name then my soul slips away
Darkness pulls me away I'm falling into nowhere I can't see anything I want it over now Death comes knocking again I'm falling into darkness I can't feel anything I guess it's over now
Falling into nothing Feel my soul now Slipping away Here is a link to the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUvev4xsOqg Let me know what you think.

Erik, I have found another song that fits Walker very well. It's called The End Has Come and it's from The Punisher soundtrack. I think this one might actually fit Walker better than I Stand Alone. The scene with Walker and Torlic and the stormy weather go together very well with this song I think. I reread that scene while listening to this song and it really adds to the experience. You really get a sense of Walker's emotions and it really adds to the visual/cinematic effect. Here's a link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PVEqj5CYZc The song is by Ben Moody, Jason Miller and Jason Jones. Everyone says Ben Moody is from Evanescence but I have their latest album and can't find his name anywhere. Knowing you were a fan I thought I would ask you for help. I look forward to your comments. |

Ben Moody was from the band, though he left in October 2003 during EV's European tour. He's had little to do with them since the release of Fallen, which is why you won't see his name anywhere on The Open Door.

I got curious hand had to hear the song.....
Ah Yes, Great song
Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum.
Struck by the sounds before the sun, I knew the night had gone. The morning breeze like a bugle blew Against the drums of dawn. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum.
The ocean wild like an organ played, The seaweed's wove its strands. The crashin' waves like cymbals clashed Against the rocks and sands. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum.
I stood unwound beneath the skies And clouds unbound by laws. The cryin' rain like a trumpet sang And asked for no applause. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum.
The last of leaves fell from the trees And clung to a new love's breast. The branches bare like a banjo played To the winds that listened best.
I gazed down in the river's mirror And watched its winding strum. The water smooth ran like a hymn And like a harp did hum. Lay down your weary tune, lay down, Lay down the song you strum, And rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings No voice can hope to hum.
