Just saw Fiends Folio and Vile Darkness(had mature only sticker on it)in my local bookstore. Looks like some nice pics, but at 32 bucks apiece, a little steep for this non-player

I didn't think they were that expensive. I didn't know they were 32 bucks. But then again, I have known the owner of the game store for the last 16 years so now my gaming supplies are 30% off. I don't even look at the price tag, just tell him to bundle up the D&D stuff when it comes in and I will buy it. My rent is real expensive. Maybe I should stop that.
But ViLE darkness anyway is worht it. I haven't gotten Fiend Folio yet.

I wouldnt buy these books unless youre a DM. WotC publications are very expensive but the content is quite nice and they do look pretty good. Im particulary impressed with Fiend Folio, there are a lot of very nasty creatures in there, a majority are quite frightening!! I dont have the heart to throw anything at all out of that book at my players!!! |

Rad and my friend Mournblade can i please ask you a question?
Is the heroes build guidebook a good investment to buy for running a game in which the players have never played D&D before. Some have played 2nd Edition, but the majority havent? I am also trying to find a Copy of the Starter Set. IS this actually worth even think about buying to introduce the players? I have seen an electronic copy of the Silver Marches and went out and ordered my own. But i havent bought the FRCS yet, I have an good knowledge of it from my old 2nd edition Revised Box set Camapaign setting . Is the new one worth it?

Hero Builder Guidebook Useful? Yes, for new players especially. If your players have RP experience in other games (Shadowrun, MERP,GURPS or whatever) then much of what is in there might (note I say MIGHT) be obvious to them depending on thier level of insight into the game.
Starter Set Never heard of it...
FRCS Worth it? Yes, without any reservation I say get this book if you are running 3rd edition. There is a great deal of new information in this sourcebook. Highly recommended.
Hope that helps and sorry if I stepped on Rad's or Mournblade's toes |

I totally agree with Artalis, the Hero Builders is a nice accessory, especially for new players.
You shouldnt even be asking the question about the FRCS.... its a MUST!!!
As for the Starter Set, are you refering to the D&D box with something like "Let the adventures begin" or whatever on the cover? I dont have this box as I assumed it would be too basic and judging by some of the old 2nd edition AD&D boxes of that type I thought it best to steer clear. |

Rad you are correct with your assumption about the Starter set. I will take care to stay well away! Hopefully if everything goes well i will be purchasing a Copy of Hero builders from ebay. As for the FRCS ill just need to save up . Thanks for the Advice everyone.

I bought the starter set because I wanted a very quick and basic overview of 3e back in 2000 when it first was released. It has nice counters, which fit in the squares well, and some good grid maps. But if you have the rulebooks PH, DMG, and MM then the starter set is useless, except for the counters and maps. But Sword and Sorcery released a GOOD counter set, so get that instead.
The herobuilders guidebook is one of the few D&D accessories I DON'T have. I have pretty experienced players, so the herobuilder is useless then. But if you have new players, from what I have seen it is a good overview. |

"The Hero Builder's Guidebook" isn't just "The Min-Maxer's Guidebook", is it? |

Vile Darkness is an awesome book, lots of cool stuff (I've been a DM since I offically retired Edain Shadowstar). I would consider it an great tool for spicing up the campaign with some new stuff.
Do not have the Fiend Folio yet...have not gotten around to grabbing it. But, I have heard it's good. As for the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting...

I don't think the Forgotten Realms Book costs 40 gp's
If that were so, that would make a Gold Piece roughly equivalent to a dollar. Lets compare the economy with BEER. According to the Players handbook a MUG of ale costs 4cp. Well as much as I wish it were true, a beer does not cost 4 cents. Ofcourse in America we have beer like BUDWEISER WORTH 4 CENTS, but it costs more like $2 a bottle. And we all know Budweiser, coors, and other types of spring water are not worth $2 a bottle.
Now lets compare it too food. According to the players handbook a GOOD meal costs 5sp. I realize that there are many folks from ENgland and Scotland here, that do not understand the concept of a GOOD meal... OH but wait you guys have Curry, so maybe you do. BUt generally A GOOD type meal is hard to find in England. (we in America have terrible tasting beer, but at least we have good food.) But England has incredible tasting beer, and well they eat BLACK PUDDING. When I saw that in a chippie shop, I was very nervous that it was going to come after me. I was looking for the OCHRE JELLY, but the lady told me they only had Marmalade. I knew MArmalade was harmless because Padington Bear used to eat it on sandwiches. I saw various Gelatanous cubes in the shop but when I finally figured out what head cheese WAS I decided gelatanous cubes were not for me. I finally wemt elsewhere and settled on the Green Slime, that some people call Saag Panir. But in England you eat anything that MIGHT have taste... That is not ALSO called HEAD CHEESE. There is just nothing good about that name. ANd when you find out HOW it is made, well you would think it is a food you would find in RAVENLOFT or something.
Oh yeah well assuming that a good meal costs 50sp, that would mean that a good meal in america would cost 50 cents. I have yet to get a good meal for 50 cents.
SO I think bookwyrm might have been a little off on the cost of the Forgotten Realms Book. More than likely it would cost approximately 2 g.p.'s. But that is expensive for that is easily 10 pints of Guiness.
Though I have to say I have been DYING for Pickled onions lately.

*GURK*
Mournblade stop throwing water on my fun I wasn't trying to be exact and you know it I was just using an in-character format that required as little conversion as possible!
*pant*pant*pant*
Look, I KNOW that the systems didn't match up. They weren't meant to. NO ONE was mistaking what I meant. But if you want to be so picky about it, we can increase it by a factor of 100. Then the FRCS would cost 4 sp. Would that satisfy you?
At the risk of nullifying my rightous anger, that was a very funny treatment of the food. Just duck when an Englishman comes your way. |

INdeed it does!!!
When Manual of the Planes first came out, way back in 1st edition, I took a trip out to South Dakota. I was wandering around looking for Manuel of the Plains, because I heard he had some good information. BOY was I surprised when I found out it was a BOOK!!!
When it came out in 3rd edition I knew better, and so just took a trip to the bookstore.

NO MORE PANZY DEMONS LIKE IN 1ST EDITION. NOW THEY ARE FINALLT SCARY AND REAL MENACING. AS FOR THE SPELLS IN THIS BOOK ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS IF YOU LIKE TO PLAY EVIL AS A DM THIS BOOK IS LIKE CAVIAR. THE FIEND FOLIO IS COOL BUT I WAS DISSAPOINTED TO OPEN AND FIND NO GITHYANKI! |

Yes, if anything, the demons in The Book of Vile Darkness are definately described with the appropriate levels of evil, depraity, and sheer freakiness. So are the devils. Definately the best source for information about all you evil overlords in the Abyss and the Nine Hells.

Firstly, interesting simile. Secondly, yes, if there is a better book for evil campaigns out there, I haven't heard of it. As for The Fiend Folio I haven't gotten it int he mail yet, but no githyanki?!?! Not...possible...must be...a...mistake! That is seriously wrong. Oh, and Lazerrus, please turn caps off. People where have you BEEN! The Githyanki have been out for AT LEAST 9 months. If you would have travelled to the plains and asked Manuel, you would have known about it.
Githyanki and Githzerei were published in the Manual of the Planes for 3rd edition.
