The player characters having achieved many great victories and reached High Level (13 on average) have decided to settle themselves down in Cormyr after the Great Dragon debacle that we're going to play some adventures in playing the periphery of (defending Arabel from Goblin assault and a Sembian kidnapping plot against the days old Azoun the Fifth)
They've decided in the wake of the disaster to set up shop to help get Cormyr back on its feet. Given they're technically the Barons of the Stonelands (I gave the Keep on the Borderlands a "build a keep" twist and its holding out nicely---It's still a major problem spot but now adventurers have a place of rest to go as they hunt through the Stonelands)
Now I'm working on designing a new set of adventures for our heroes as they deal with the after effects. I want to deal with heavy politics as the players are dire supporters of Allusair for various reasons. I'm not sure how to describe the situation, though I'm pretty sure it's one huge disaster and there's also the coming destruction of Tilverton.
Capturing what an utter nest of vipers the nobility is also a concern. Please share any ideas one may have or suggestions.

you could play up them being Barons of the Stonelands and introduces a more stragic/management level of play to your game
You may also want to check out Neverwinter Nights 2 as the main character obtains a ruined keep during the campaign and has a number of quests and decisions to make about it, including.
Sponsoring a low level adventuring party
Rebuilding the Keep theyve inherited
Bringing people to the keep as settlers
Having people want to build hamlets outside of the castle walls
Recruiting Soldiers to protect your castle
Setting the standards for the troops you want to recruit
Deciding how you want to deploy your troops ie Should they focus on patroling the roads or defending the frontier
You could also focus on the PCs looking for Cohorts for there Barony
You should probably grab Powers of Faerun as it will be invaluable particularly the Order in the Court and Tame the Frontier chapters

All very good business.
I'm also interested in keeping the players close to court with Lady Allusair and Caladnei plus the rest of the family.
well theres always the Fire Knives trying to knock off the Royal family the Cormyrian Royal family has so few members at the moment that the fire Knives may actually have a shot at bumping them off.
Youve got the Cyricist Darkhold to West
Youve also got the magic dead Helm lands boarding your players Barony (Assuming you havent cleaned it up)
You also be intered in a Dungeon module called Doorway to Everywhere which includes a Netherese site in the Stonelands (it would be to low for 13th level characters without reworking though)
Theres also the module Into the Dragons Lair actually I suggest you check out that module even if you dont want to run it as it contains an organisation (Freedom riders?) that want to over throw the monarchy in the post Azoun IV period

Plus they would have to keep on their toes, as many major organizations would send spies and infiltrators to this new settlement... lots of opportunities for intrigue!
Another thought: they might also be approached by many faiths, who are interested in building a shrine or temple in the community, or near it. Helmites, especially, since they never got that shrine in Arabel |

Not forgetting Shade to the north, and the problematic weather as a result of the events of the Return of the Archwizards trilogy. |
Life is either daring adventure or nothing. |

I have decided on a peculiar plotline here that's probably going to tick off my players a great deal. I want to run it by you guys to see if it works for you in your particular minds.
The first thing I'm going to be doing is treating Cormyr as a fairly wild and lawless place at this time. I'm going to go out on a limb to say that the majority, perhaps eight out of ten, purple knights have been killed and the majority of the War Wizards. This pretty much leaves the Crown out of its traditional body of heroes and reliant on the PCs to deal with the majority of threats to the Realm.
I'm thinking of adapting the Against the Giants series and maybe the Slavers modules of 1st edition as inspirations for the storyline. The idea that humanoid excursions from the Thunder Mountains are just impossible to stop now and that Sembian slavers are openly carting people off now.
This is all just set up though for what I think would be a very interesting choice in the death of Young King Azoun the Fifth. Basically, this act will force Allusair to become Queen and work on saving the Obaskyr dynasty herself though plenty of bastards from it are likely to emerge as well.
What I'm not sure about is who I should make the grand villain of this 'Collapse of Cormyr' Saga and whether or not I should encourage the players to debate seizing power. Plus, who might make their own moves in this. |
