Has there ever been any thought given to the idea of publishing a book comprised of nothing but full, fold out maps of each and every corner of Faerun, much like those included in the early box sets?

I would like to see somesort of a map compendium myself ... Perhaps something in the spirit of the old trailmap series. Wotc employees please note.

It's often put forward, and Wizards people have said they're open to the idea. A book of fold-out maps would be impractical and expensive to produce, though. I'd go for a colour 240-page book at 1":15 miles (I think that works out about right).

Of course, this would rekindle the new-map problem which is, right now, easy to ignore. Five years on, does anyone think it was worth stretching the geography around for the sake of fitting more land on one product's poster map?

No! More land means there is more for us to work with.

I think that it would be a nice touch, I would certainly buy one such product.

I would love to see such a product. But I can imagine it would be more expensive than a normal accessory, simply because of the work on the detailed maps needed.

But how would they work in new feats and PrCs?

Ha ha, yeah! They'd have to add a Mapmaker PrC and a "Master Cartographer" feat.

Hahahaha, the bane of every Realms accessory IMHO. It cuts pages away that could have been filled with lore.

Hmm. Glass half empty feeling here.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 'Volo's Map's of the Realms' type accessory, even if a few pages were taken up with magic items (Magic Maps, anyone?), feats and PRC's. I think it would be more interesting then just raw maps.

Magical maps are something we never seem to see... Which draws vacuum, because there is certainly plenty of potential for them. One of my Lords of Waterdeep is rumored to have a magical map, and there is, of course, the Marauder's Map in the Harry Potter books, but that's about all I can think of for magical maps in fantasy...

It would be petty to complain if we got the atlas, but it would still be ridiculous tokenism.

Hello-

I seem to remember seeing a magical 'map' possibly from the book of wondrous items for the Original D&D line - IIRC - it was a blank sheet that uppon command would produce an image of the surrounding area on it. I dont specifically recall if it included such things as secret/hidden doors or living creatures - but I thought it was kinda neat anyway!

I am collecting the D&D Minis. I would be more than willing to trade with people. You can send me a PM here with your email listed - and I can send you my minis list. Thanks!

Successfully traded with Xysma!

how old is the atlas they published?

Yup. With the way the new map represents parts of Faerun, one of the places I added to the Realms for my game doesn't make as much sense anymore.

this new atlas would certainly be a precious gem for any DM... I have been as lucky as to get my hands on a used edition of the old atlas and i use it excesively. Have there been any attempts to make some sort of regional atlases that could be comprised into some sort of complete atlas?

Can anyone explain how the directions work in the realms? why is it that you go East from Sembia to go to Waterdeep and the like? On real maps the right side is East and the Left is west but it seams to be backwords in the Realms.

Not sure what map you are referencing but Waterdeep is not east from Sembia.....

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I have read in more than one book where the directions were wrong, the Waterdeep/Sembia thing was just a example. Must be I have run into a series of typos. I know for a fact I read this somewhere in the pages I have read so far in War in Tethyr and at least one other time in one of the Swords and Songs books but I can not reacall what one.

I guess it wouldnt be the first typo that I have noticed since in one of the first chapters in War in Tethyr it says that Stillhawk (the ranger) picks up his arrow and licks it then it goes on to say that he can not speak because orcs cut out his tounge lol.

Thanks for clearing this up however, I started to think I was going crazy lol.

Well,

Not sure I guess I didn't pay that much attention to the directions since I know, from the maps, that Sembia is far from Waterdeep. One is east of Cormyr and the other is far northwest of Cormyr, halfway across the continent.

Yes, you might chalk up such wacky directions to a typo.

Personally, I'd like to see a boxed set. Not the usual type of boxed set, but more like a map for every country/nation, folded like a regular map and fit into one or the other pouch, much like the road maps the ADAC in Germany puts out for Europe.

A full boxed set map of the Realms, Above and Below.
Hmmmm I wish they would. That and a Globe of the world.

But it would be a big boxed set if every area / country was mapped.

How far would people want it to go ?

All major cities mapped?

or just areas?

WotC should ring Ordnance Survey now and commission a full set of maps!!

I wish!

Delz
