I got a question: I cant seem to find the number of inhabitants of the city, are we to find a suitable number or is it listed somewhere? I ask because it is relevant to my work with city watch and the garrison of Helms of Sembia. |

Yeah, I was looking at that too, because I figured the more people in town, the more buildings they need to live and work in, but I think it was left open, depending on how popular the Project got. I mean if thousands of people were working on the project, it'd be filled already. That is my guess. hey check your PMs.

Victor: yeah, you're right. I just noticed some got resized by Photobucket. (damn them to the Abyss) I'll fix the maps tonight. (Tuesday)
Zimme: That sounds fine. That number sounds like a good number for FK citizens. Even with slight flucuation for seasons/shipping/etc. (as you described earlier in MSN). It is a good number of permanent citizens to go with.
Now have we agreed that that number is the TOTAL population, or non military citizens? Does that include the footmen, cavalry, and guards for the walls? ON the maps I did make some offical buildings pretty regularly around the inside perimiter of the walls, for barracks and housing for troops.
So either way, it'll work for me for a good Pop.

Sorry for the x-mas delay on FK work, and yes the city guard will have to come from that number, the city population is still in flux, taking into consideration that we are nowhere near finished with the interior of the city(or the outside for that matter ) |

Truer words never spoken, partner. Festive is a time all of us get alot on our plate ( no pun intended) so it's understood. I am thinking actually about redoing the maps( yet again) look at the number of buildings, is that the size and number compriable to your estimated population?
if it is, then I can leave them alone... but if there aren't enough buildings, let me know. We'll need to update the maps. |

Okay. Maps have all been resized to 650pixels x890 pixels.
You could always edit it and put it together for yourself Victor. and I do thank you for pointing that out. I Do need help with things like that on this project, if you're interested in helping me edit stuff.
Also, what buildings are we missing? what locations and which ones?

The castle is outside of town on one of two twin mountains that sit NW of the city's North Gate. it sits on a seperate map. The castle map sits to the upper left of the Trades Ward

nice, but seeing it as a whole... I think it might need some tweaking. Not the map or work you did, but my maps in general. Specifically, the building size an stuff like width of streets and etc...*goes back to his art table* |

Okay how many citywatchmen do you have I'm thinking about the number of thieves that can be in the guild. Thinking maybe around a hundred actual members |

What am i to do LucianBarasu ? I am working on the "the surondings".
What do you mean, what are you to do? You decided to do the surroundings correct?
Look, close your eyes...imagine this city is a city you are creating from the ground up..this is a region you're creating from the ground up. You have no rules but the stuff previously written by others, and your own imagination. Nothing is holding you back...
You want to create a hunting lodge outside of town in a copse of trees, make the outside map and inside floorplan create some hunter NPCS to go inside it....then DO IT.
You want to make a smaller and closer detailed map of the buildings around the castle ( where some business owners were allowed by the king and council to set up shop to sell to those not allowed into town) and then once you do the smaller closer maps, do the floorplans of the buildings and the full description of the businesses...then DO IT.
You want to draw a small ruined tower, that sits on the Druid mountain ( the mountain beside the castle mountain) and make it an adventure hook with history of who built it, make the maps of the floors, and a small dungeon underneath it? THEN DO IT.
As you can see, I could go on and on...whatever you want to do outside the city walls Victor you can do. As long as it does not conflict with anything that is currently posted on the website for the FK project.
Some people went as far as putting in a few rivers to the North and placed a small town up ther of a feww hundred people..filled in key NPCs, did up a history of the town...put in a few guilds...put in a few shady evil guys... they DID IT.
It's your turn..go nuts...If you're looking for direction from me or for me to hand you an assignment, use any of the above three examples I gave you.
p.s. I think i'd like to see a cottage or small stone tower (3 floors) that has a tunnel linking to the sewer system for those "undesirables" to enter our fair city. Nothing huge, just man sized. like the American "underground railroad." Floor plans of the tower, (3 levels) the basement, subbasement with tunnel going off the edge of the paper.. You could put the tower in a copse of trees on the plains.... |

My two coppers, for a city of that size a City Watch should likely number in the range of 250 to 500. The number of Watch should depend on two factors the number of laws enforced and the citys ability to pay them. Should the city be crime filled there might be wards that te Watch does not enter at all though I do not believe that is desired.
The number of thieves that might exist in the city depends on the types of activities they concentrate on. If begging is legal the guild likely will be larger because a protection racket could be set up, extroting beggers for good spots, etc. Depending on crime levels those that can afford private guards might have them. There will always be a criminal element to some degree in any city, it depends on how well laws are enforced as to how strong they would be.
The city will or should have a Guard as well, that can help out the Watch in times of need. |

Lucian I can tell you that the sewers can't be entered by anyone other than the Guildmembers and in "heightened" situations the citywatch/guard... |

okay but again, think practically... Sewers need one thing...maintenance... the sewers might be "used' or "ran" by the thieves guild, but you can't have them preventing anyone from going in.
Sewer workers, paid by the city or the king to clear out any infestation/blockage/broken pipe etc. if they are attacked or ran off, the city watch and the guard would POUR into the sewers en MASSE... jail, arrest or KILL anyone down there that prevented city workers to do their job..commanded by the king or the council.
Do the thief's guild use the sewers more than anyone? okay sure. Do they say certain sections are off limits to NORMAL people (i.e. adventurers) yes. Can they stop everyone even wandering patrols of watch or guards across the entire city, every entrance and grate or cavern annex into the sewers? ...no Would they stop workers from going down to do their job, or other people RIGHTFULLY allowed in the sewers? no No thief's guild is going to do that kind of work themselves..."What? and get dirty? hell no." "Let the poor slobs who get paid to do it, come down here and clean the sewers...We'll just watch they don't find any of our safeholds or stashrooms.""
If they did stop anyone else from using the sewers, eventually the thief's guild would leave the sewers, because the sewers would decay and fall to ruin. then noone would use the sewers.
Can the thief's guild you created run part of the sewers, or in their words "run all of the sewers"? yes. (they "think" they run the sewers, but in honesty they can't run all of it..you know how bravado works) Can you say that they know every time someone enters the sewers and from what entrance, due to wards or spies?...Yes. Can they stop everyone from going into The CITY'S owned sewers? no.

Okay granted I got carried away a bit but running into them in the sewers is very likely to say the least ... What do you think otherwise does it make sense ? |
