There are bards...skalds, and chapbooks. There are also various spy networks that have the magic to transmit news quickly. Furthermore you have traders/merchants.
How does the common person/adventurer receive news? He cannot switch on CNN and watch what is going on in Shadowdale or Amn. If he lives in Waterdeep, or Suzail, or some other place, he might get "reports" on the national and local events fairly quickly through chapbooks or cryers, but how does the average Waterdhavian, Cormyrean, or whatnot get info on what is going on in the rest of the world?
Does it even concern him?
Naturally the more cosmopolitan a society is, the easier it is to acquire news, and to be interested in it, but for people in Hartsvale, for example, how do they find out if something happens in Waterdeep that might even have significance in their region (however unlikely that may be)?
Hell, if we take our real life situation, people in Africa probably have no idea who is being elected in France or Australia for that matter. This is not even a matter of technology or lack thereof. When I lived in the USA I didn't find out that the Berlin wall had fallen until 2 days later, I was so busy living my own life.
There is not only the matter of being too involved in one's own life, but also the issue of general ignorance of the population, which is present in every real life society, and hence probably also in the Realms.
So how do those that are interested, and do not possess the means to stay informed all day every day, get their information about a far off realm?
Probably very slowly, and belatedly...

Pg 44 of Power of Faerun discusses this, mainly in relation with Religion as that is the religion powers chapter. People hear news in three locations:
1)The Streets/Markets 2)The Taverns 3)The Temples

| Somewhat...now I know the where...but not the how... by the time a merchant reaches, say, Waterdeep on his travels from, say, Impiltur, he has crossed half a dozen or more countries learned and forgotten many issues he has hear about... how does news travel? How many people in Waterdeep for example knew of Azoun's crusade back in 1360? How many Waterdhavians knew of the Tuigan threat? Or how many in Cormyr know of the events of the Darkwalker war? |

Wow,
I'm surprised people still don't know about my compiled documents.... |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I'm a little surprised, with the availability of all her outlets accross the Realms, that Aurara (sp?) hasn't got into the "newspaper" buisness...that expansion of her services could make alot of GP |
