I just realised something about the current rulers of Algarond, Cormyr, Evermeet and the Silver Marches.
Other than all of them being women...
- Their names all start with an A; Alassra aka the Simbul, Alusair, Alustriel, Amlaruil...
- All of them are seen as just rulers and are doing their best to keep their kingdom in one piece after certain events.
- 3 of them are Chosen
- 3 of them are well over 100 years old
- All of them would be doing something else rather than look after a kingdom if not for their responsibilities.
- This one isn't exactly confirmed but according to some, all of them have long hair
Another observation with three other Realms characters: Araevin, Galaeron and Liriel
- All three of them are magic users and went through a lot of change after discovering new sources of magic.
- They had enemies who wanted to control their powers.
- Obviously, they're all elves.
- Plus they all had human friends
- If you consider Melegaunt human enough, the human friends often wind up dead.
- They are all considered outcasts.
- None of their main enemies were truly defeated.
I'm sure there's more of such similiarities, but sometimes I wonder if how many were done consciously and how many were not.

Naming the founding villages of Netheril after the members of Ian Gillan's band from the early 80s is a lack of creativity, but fun...I always get the chuckles when I read of Gers etc |

Oh don't remind me of that one. I could never take that box seriously after that reference. And that is in spite of being a Ian Gillan fan for years. |

I agree. The simplest explanation (it's just chance) is probably the correct one.
Besides, note that in both examples, the one has to be selective with the starting characters--many novels have simliar characters and plots, so if you look hard enough (and set the right parameters) you can see "striking similarities" in just about anything. |

'Tis quite true... I once had this cake assignment in Communications II: we had to either compare or contrast -- not both, just one -- any two characters from the stories we'd read that semester. I made the assigment more difficult on myself: I took a guy who murdered an entire family when one person recognized him as an escaped convict, and a kid who quit his supermarket job in protest over the way his manager treated some girls in bikinis, and I compared the two. I had to stretch on a couple of the points, but my teacher was quite impressed, anyway, and said that no one had tried that one before. |
