I read about a dead magic steel or some such in some Realms fiction. Is there any kind of mechanic or game lore referance to this?

IIRC, an assasin had a weapon forged of it to slay mages. I gather that it offered some protection from magic as well. It may have been in Silverfall? I'm just not sure.

Our groups are all sticking with 3.X classic Realms.

I don't rememebr any "dead magic steel" in any RPG supplement...or novel..but I read Silverfall a long time ago

I think it would be a viable material (mined around Tantras for example) but it may be to unbalancing though...

another explaination is a simple sword enchanted with some sort of "anti-magic" field

Volo's Guide to All Things Magical (formerly a suppressed work , available for free from the Wizards downloads page) describes a metal called hizagkuur, which reflects back all magic cast at it...

That may have been the inspiration for the material in the novel. Alas it's quite toned down in 3.5.

There's also a special mythril down in Iltkazar that is immune to magic. They made three gates of it. Dunno whether it's the mythril or some magical enhanchement.

Havent seen a canon reference for it but I'm certain some enterprising magekiller would have dug some up.

dead magic steel would be impossible to enchant. I imagine it would have a chance of dispelling magic it came into contact with. Perhaps theres a chance it could rob people of memorized spells on a hit.
