In the Baldur's Gate game there's a creature called a 'Battle Hororr' which near as I can tell was invented for the game, but seems likely inspired by a PnP source.
'Battle Horrors' carry a flaming sword (via the Flame Blade spell?), which IIRC disappears when you cast Dispel Magic. I can't quite recall all the specifics, but possibly other magic protections such as Blur might be stripped from Battle Horrors by Dispel Magic as well. In contrast, the game's Helmed Horrors appear as disembodied 'suits of armor', i.e., a helmet, shield, and flail, and are not affected by Dispel Magic.
Would you think these Battle Horrors are inspired by 2nd edition AD&D's Death Knight? Or might they be a version of Helmed Horror (which are featured in several of Ed Greenwood's novels prior to release of the Baldur's Gate game, even if they are not found in the AD&D Monstrous Manual).
The Helmed Horror is basically a guardian construct made from animating suits of armour with a malevolent spirit and setting them to guard things.
The Death Knight is an animated corpse of a dishonoured and fallen paladin that fell doing particular fell acts, who is typically equipped with a magical sword.

Battle horrors are modified helmed horrors that first appeared in FA1 Halls of the High King. The flaming sword isn't a characteristic of them.
It's an automaton, nothing like a death knight which is a reanimated person. |

| Unfortunately, I am no expert in this matter. I can quote the lines of the NPCs--which, sparing you, I will not do at the moment, I promise--but all I know about the creatures are that if you don't kill them, they'll kill you, so hop to it! Also, Xvarts never carry silver rings, but I don't think you needed to know that, so I won't mention it again. |

As a player in Ed's "home" Realms campaign, my principal character faced and fought battle horrors almost a decade before any Neverwinter Nights game (or for that matter, the computer company that created those games) existed. They are indeed more powerful variants of Helmed Horrors (and of course, Ed created both; not to mention Neverwinter, and even the name "Neverwinter Nights," which referred to a racy "talk of the town" chapbook circulated in Neverwinter. I recall Ed telling us about Jeff Grubb phoning him and asking if he minded a computer company "borrowing" the name.) love, THO |
