The twit sent PM to me, I infer it was the same message, I delete anything that looks like spam (I get over 500 per day in one email account) but it appears a person is working the system again as oposed to a simple bot. |

Hello Mace Hammerhand
You received the following message from: desmond22 (desmond1111williams@ yahoo.com)
At: http://forum.candlekeep.com/
FROM DESMOND WILLIAMS C/O: REFUGEE CAMP-ABIDJAN REPUBLIC OF COTE D'IVOIRE.
Dear One in Christ
I Came across your profile and have Decided to get in touch with you after prayer,to see if you can help me solve my problem. My name is desmond williams,The son of (Late Chief williams philip)Who lost his life in the course of the crisis here in Cote D'ivoire on the 7th of November last year on his way to there company ( Nestle Food Plc).
My father willed in cash, the sum of £6.000.000(SIX MILLION POUNDSTERLING) which he deposited in a Fixed/Suspence account here in Abidjan Cote D'ivoire in west Africa, with enabling conditions for the release of the fund which are as follows: (1) That I must be 22 years or above. (2) That upon request for the release of the fund, there must be evidence of investment intentions especially outside the west africa, I contact you therefore to confirm if you can absorb me in partnership in your company or possibly advise me on any investment opportunity in your country.
When I reach agreement with you which is the bank reqirement, the bank will release my fund into an accountof your choice which must be in your country,I will then come over for the shearing of the money which you would have 30 percent of the total money.we can go into business partnership if your country is good for investment. I expect your urgent response or call including your addresses, your telephone and fax number.
Thanks for expected cooperation. My regards desmond williams

Took me about a second to identify what that was.
Why are spammers so incompetent? Putting off many of their potential dupes by addressing them as 'One in Christ'. Obvious attempts to bypass spam filters. Advertising stuff (hoodia) that no one has heard of or wants outside of spam emails.
It's a disgrace to the respectable profession of con man. |

I had turned off the setting that allows other members of the forum to contact me by email when this all started, in hopes that I would get by-passed. But alas, they hit me by PM instead.

Delz, maybe the reason why you get so many if them is probably that you do reply to them - when someone replies it tells the spammer that the E-mail address is "live", and it increases in value on the E-mail address exchange - you've just made a poor spammer's portfolio go up in value |

Hey Alaundo how about forcing all future Candlekeep members to answer a realms question before they can be issued a login as part of the account creation process?
Say something like Nam one of Mystras chosen etc
That should make the Nigerian crooks job harder |

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

or they educate themselves in Realms Lore and learn not to abuse the 'keep
seriously, a questionare isn't a bad idea except it would exclude the newbies and youngsters that do not know that much Realms Lore (yet) |

Not that we particularly want to do that (as I'm sure Candlekeep is as much about teaching others as it is learning) but I think maybe 5 questions (of which you have to answer one) should give anyone legitimate with even a basic grasp of the realms access |

How nice it is to wake up to another call for aid from another Candlekeep "member".
I am a little bit unsure when it comes to a questionnaire; If we use to easy questions all it takes is a simple web search and if its to difficult it turns real realms fans away. Alaundos plan of only opening the ability to send private mails after a certain number of posts (say, five) is a better one, if it can be done. |

Isn't most spam semi- or fully automated? My thoughts were if the question had to be answered on creation, even a simple one, that it would foil any automated program and put off anyone putting in the effort just to spam
edit: speaking of which, does candlekeep have one of those 'enter the numbers in the box' things on signup to prevent automated ones or not? |

I'm all for a questionnaire, just leave out any question regarding Drizzt, so we actually people genuinely interested in the Realms.
In the "real" Candlekeep you have to bring a book worth 10k gold to be admitted, why not put up the "same" requirement? |
