Hey.

Yes, it's me again back to ask some questions that popped up as yesterday was the first session in my new game. Here we go!

1. Is there any sourcebook that gives additional details on The Vast? I know there is information on Raven's Bluff but I was looking for stuff more along the lines of the people and culture of it.

2. All my players are fairly new to the Forgotten Realms and so I am helping them create histories. There are two players histories that are giving me trouble. The first is a half drow lawful neutral monk who worships Torm. I am trying to figure out where/how he recieved training and all that.
The second character is a shield dwarf chaotic neutral (i know, they all wanted to play neutral characters =/) cleric of Shaundakul. That is the odd one. I am still trying to figure out how he got initiated in to the ranks of the Helping Hand's clergy. He has hinted that he wanted to be from a dwarven community but left there. And also that he wanted to be slightly drunk all the time and a part time traveling potion maker.

Odd huh? Yeah, that's what I thought. Crazy players and their crazy ideas for PC's. But hey, it's their first game so I went ahead and decided to have a hands off approach to at least the selection of their classes and races.

edit. I have one more question

4. This one will be easiest to answer. Where do you find the CR's for NPC classes like Expert and Warrior?

And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood

The half-drow could be an orphan left at a convenient temple... Or he could be the son of a woman who was briefly held by drow, who intended to sell her into slavery. One or more drow took advantage of her, but then she either escaped or was freed by someone attacking the drow (or whoever she was sold to). She might have been a follower of Torm herself, or she gave her child to a relative who was a cleric of Torm... Or she died/was killed shortly after childbirth, while some Tormites were freeing her and other slaves. One took the child to raise himself...

As for the dwarf, that's easier. Since the Time of Troubles, Shaundakul has been popping up to help travelers in need, often in return for some favor, be it a task or worship. So dwarfy could have been alone or with a group when they found themselves in trouble, and the Helping Hand popped up to help them. This impressed the dwarf enough that he eventually (or even immediately) converted to Shaundakul's faith, later seeking out a temple or shrine.

1. The 2E Raven's Bluff book is the best sourse of info for the Vast IMO (the back section of the book)...the old 2E Forgotten Realms hardcover had a detailed description of each city in the Vast

2. that is an easy one...within the Monistary of the Yellow Rose in Damara or in Tantras (HQ of Torm's faith)..they are both in or beside the Vast...and being half-drow...an orphan is the classic excuse

3. maybe Shaundakul himself manifested to the dwarf..and make him a bit of a zealot thus the CN alignment

4. IN the 3E DM's guide it says an NPC class is worth 1/2 the CR as a normal PC class...so a 4th lv orc warrior has a CR of 2

The 1e/2e FR boxed sets. Unapproachable East has a few tidbits also. As well, various POLYHEDRON issues:- #72, 88, 89, 91, 92, 93, and 110.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. You answered all my questions.

I'll have to try and aquire the Raven's Bluff sourcebook sometime. Mayhaps it will be useful for the information on the city if my PC's don't get themselves killed in their current situation (they had a bad route of random encounters, then when warned that the nearby forest was full of goblins they insisted on going there anyway). I hear a lot of good things about UE so I was going to try and get that anyway. But it just sweetens the deal that it has information that could help my current game.

About the histories, I like them a lot. I'll probably use the ideas you gave me Wooly and write up a brief history for each of them to expand on for our next session. My other PC's are going to be pretty easy. A neutral good human fighter and a chaotic neutral gnome rogue.

On the CR's; Yeah, I was thinking it would be around there but I coudn't find where it stated it.

Or rather, you could just download the PDF for free at the WotC website:- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads
