I'm getting ready to send some players through all of Undermountain. Going through the various books I got a few questions...
1. From UMII (2E), there is a sub-level with an adventure titled "The Well of Shadows". Which of the sub-levels is this according to Waterdeep 3E (my initial guess is UMSLM Vanrakdoom, or is it another one or one not even mentioned in Waterdeep 3E)???
2. On the Adventures Map for UMII (2E), there is an unkeyed sub-level for personal DM expansion. Just wondering if any of the sub-levels detailed in Waterdeep 3E corresponds to that area?
Now I only count 13 detailed sub-levels in Waterdeep 3E and we all know there are 14 sub-levels in Undermountain...so possibly one of the above is one of these sub-levels not mentioned in Waterdeep 3E...if anyone knows please let me know....thanks!!! :)

There doesn't seem to be some hard evidence on this....should this question be directed to Ed himself mayhaps??? |

I wouldn't say that there are only fourteen sublevels. There are as many as Halister wants. We know that he completely reconfigures one sublevel (the one with clear walls that you go through in Stardock) every time someone makes it all the way through. So he's got total control of the levels and can restructure them at will. This is also why no one else can ever hope to conquer Undermountain. Undermountain is one of those places that you can never completely explore, because it will change in front of you and behind you.
So if you want the Well of Shadows to be a sub-level, then it is and you can add portals accordingly. If you don't, then it doesn't exist, or maybe the portals are all down for maintenence.
I guess what I'm saying is, don't go looking for solid answers in Undermountain, because it's always changing. And don't think you'll ever explore everything, because you won't. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

Yeah in UM2 it says there are 14 sub-levels but I recall reading somewhere where it said 9 levels and "over" 14 sub-levels. Anyways on my little sketch of a vertical view of Undermountain (which gives a nice visual of what it looks like), I added an extra sub-level and marked it as connected to the Shaft Level, making it that un-keyed level (since according to Waterdeep 3E many sub-levels are connected to the Shaft and the only ones I know that aren't are the majority of them which all say they are only reachable by gates (the ones in UM2 and the three adventures)....I think I'll go add well of Shadows as a separate one (not connected to the shaft) somewhere low I think hehe :) |

Hehe, even better. I'm connecting Vanrakdoom sub-level to the Well of Shadows sub-level through the Plane of Shadows (since they both have portals to there), which should make things even more interesting (so I put it at the same depth, only kind of separate, and since it doesn't say otherwise and since it says many sub-levels are connected to the Shaft, then I connected Vanrakdoom to the Shaft) (and Arkturiadoom as well actually) |

The original Undermountain has 12 fully developed sub-levels; the ones designed since would add to that. But I wouldn't take anything UM2 says too seriously, and I wouldn't want to lock down a fixed number here. |

Should be enough for now anyways....if only we could have access to Ed's Undermountain (I'm usually more on the side of teamwork built TSR/Wizards released FR stuff, but in this case I want to see what the whole thing looks like from Ed's notes) |

If you look at Info > Map Notes > Map Details, you see it's an original map by Jay Cox. I'd say it was apocryphal. |

Well I guess I am going old school on this one and re-producing the level 2, 3 and 5 maps onto my own graph paper and using a big black marker to fill in those thick Undermountain walls. It's been an hour and I only did a small part of level 2.....so I guess another 10 hours to go :( |

Based on my measurements and due to the fact that I have rectangular bigger graph paper available, I have counted it will be 20 of these to reproduce level 2, thus 20 x 1 hour=20 hours to do LEVEL 2

Not unless you want to pay the $4 for the pdfs, and print the maps from them... |

Hmm that's an idea I haven't tried.....I'll go try that one...it won't cover level 5 but at least I could get levels 2 and 3 done quicker, easier and more accurate....thanks Wooly! :) |

If you plan on using the PDFs to base things off of, I'd suggest using photoshop to resize them to the right scales first. You can open a pdf in photoshop very easily and pick a page. I did that for another dungeon and it worked very well. |

A possible cure to your printing woes may be to sidestep the Atlas Program, and download the "Free CC2 View Printer and Viewer" available here... http://www.profantasy.com/library/dpv.asp Then just use the CC2 View Printer and Viewer program to file, open, and print. |
