I've been reading a lot of the posts on this site and finally decided to join so I could post questions and answers of my own. Anyways my question right now is that I'm starting a FR campaign which has a lot of involvment with the Zhentarim and Banite church. The basic story idea for the campaign is that the players are plaiyng through it thinking that someone is trying to bring Bane onto the Material plane. Instead of putting the PCs up against a super powerful deity, could it be possible for the church to be deluded by a demon of some sort that is using them to gain access into Faerun? Any comments or suggestions would be helpful.... oh and by the way, I've only really just begun playing with the Forgotten Realms campaign setting so if I have accidentally gotten any information wrong please correct me. Thanks!

Maybe the demon could be connected to Xvim somehow, since Xvim was Bane's son. Maybe Xvim had a son or daughter that is a demon and that demon has fooled the clergy of Bane or Xvim, depending on the year you are going to set the campaign, into believing that either of those deities have returned or are alive......
Just a quick brain storm idea. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I never thought of Xvim, which would be a good idea to have the demon want to fool Bane. I am actually basing this campaign around the year that is stated in the campaign setting book, which if I recall is shortly after Bane comes back... Would there be any demons/devils that would have connections with Xvim? Or should I just pick/make a random one? |

Hmm. I looked in Faiths & Avatars and it doesn't list any specific demons that he would use, so I'd say use any you want to. :) It does say he uses hell hounds though.
Ah, so 1372 is the date.
That would be a perfect time really for another being to step in and confuse the churches. Bane just returned, Xvim might or might not be dead, and then Cyric could also have his followers take part in the confusion and the being for your campaign could play on all that confusion and set up it's own worship. |

Yeah, 1372, going for what's in the campaign settings book because that's all I really have right now to work off of. It was easier to work with since both my group and myself are newcomers to Faerun. I'm typing up the main story for this campaign, which will probably be done sometime this evening, and I'll probably post it also just for anymore advice. |

Sounds good. :) I don't have much else to add and I tossed out a few ideas. |

Brainstorm ideas: maybe not Bane but how about a intermediary/lesser aspect of Bane, or former Champion/Chosen of Bane from the past or one that was trapped somewhere (Hell -like El in Hell? so you could still have to deal with escaped demons rampaging around). Or the Banites are trying to make deals with demons to regain/find some artifact or get the Champion/Chosen released.

Well, a vengeful demon who is loyal to Xvim makes a good choice, as does a Half-Fiend or Tiefling who wants to return Xvim to power. (Check out Goodman Games Citadel of the Demon Prince, although you do have to modify a lot, for one way to do this, though a distaff child of Bhaal works better for that plot (I'm running this one with Half Fiend Fighter 2/Rogue 5/Assassin 8, because their cambion is illegal...) |

Yeah, Xvim seems a good choice. Good luck with the campaign. |
