Hey all, I have a hypothetical question for you all. How would you handle a drow worshiper of Vhearaun that wants to have some ties to the Zhentarim. He eventually wants to do something major for Vhearaun and against the "evil female domination" of his fellows, but as a begining adventurer, he wants an organization that might aid him in aquireing wealth and getting jobs (eventually he would like to be an assassin).
The party is composed of evil/neutral characters, and each will have at least a slight affiliation with some sinister group. For example:
Wizard/Cleric . . . the still young church of Velsharoon (the campaign is set in 1370 DR)
Divniner . . . the Arcane Brotherhood in Luskan.
Rogue . . . the Shadow Thieves.
Drow Fighter . . . Vhearaunites and the Zhentarim (?).
Psychic Warrior . . . none, but her secret is that she has been experimented on by illithids (she is going to take flayerspawn psychic PrC from Complete Psionic).
All the characters are meant to be "loose agents" that aren't constantly taking order from their organizations, and the campaign is only designed to run the summer, so eventually the PCs may intentionally run into conflicts with their organizations or one another, but not at the begining of the campaign.
Back to the drow . . . he wants to be a Vhearaunite drow that has escaped a lowbown life in some drow city, and hates Lolthites. But he wants to get rich and powerful before aiding Vhearaunites in their goals.
How would the Zhentarim react to a drow agent? In 1370 the Zhentarim is still Xvimist, and I don't think ALL of their agents have to be worshipers of Xvim at this point. I know the Zhents only have minimal presense in Skullport, which actually works for the "loose agents" angle I am going for here.
Any thoughts on potential issues with this character? Thanks for your time guys.

I see no reason why they wouldn't allow it.... Especially in Skullport. |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Well, overall, we know the Zhentarim do allow the worship of drow deities in some of their holdings (so says RoZK). In addition, we also know the Black Network has a history of working with drow communities to accomplish joint goals. So, I can't really see any reason for the Zhents to deny a "loose drow agent" working with the Black Network... just so long as he working to achieve goals common to both groups -- the Vhaeraunites and the Zhentarim. Control of territory for example...

I think the drow would be quite at home working with the black network. The backstabbing would be normal and there is always room for informants that have access to rough areas like Skullport. What an interesting idea. Go for it. |

Vhaeraun it is , but I would chuck these stereotypes, at least some.
- male drow
- lowborn drow flees to surface
- hates Lolthites
- is Vhaeraun worshipper
... so the only thing missing is hating female drow.
It might be better if he subs one or two things. The worship of Mask would be an option, or just forget the worship stuff altogether. There will surely be some drow around who don't care about religion. |

Well, this is my step son's character, and he really is just now getting into drow culture as opposed to just seeing covers of books with Drizzt on them, so I'm not too worried that he is playing a "stereotypical" drow Vhearaunite, since its all new to him.

I have a trio of drow NPCs I designed a while ago... Though I'm not DM'ing and thus can't do anything with them at the moment, my intention was for them to work with the Zhents when they come to the surface, perhaps even as full members of the Zhentarim. They'll eventually strike out on their own, but they do spend some time in the Black Network.
One thing about the Black Network: if you can prove yourself to be capable, they'll prolly accept you as a member or at least an associated agent. |

Valas Hune was my favorite character from WotSQ, and you post got me thinking about him again. Perhaps the character might have ties to Bregan D'aerthe and serve as an ambassador or intermediary between that group and the Zhents. Since the Bregans seem to want closer trade ties with the surface and the Zhents would likely welcome the potential 'stable' trade with Underdark that a group like Bregan could offer it might be a good match. Just a thought |
