My wife is pregnant with our fourth child. When we first found out, we decided that if it is a boy she gets to name it and if it's a girl I get to choose the name. She had the ultra sound and I win. I love the names of the characters in the realms novels and since this is the age of uniqueness in children naming, I would like my baby girl to have a Forgotten Realms name. What do you think I should name my child?

When the Lady K and I had our first child, a baby girl, last June we decided upon Narnra -- to both honour Ed's amazing work with the Realms and because the Lady K, who was reading through Elminster's Daughter at the time, was delighted with the name itself for a baby girl.
I loved it myself and thus, agreed to it as well.

Laeral, Alassra, Alusair (careful, she might turn out to be a real spitfire), any of the Tethyrian "Queens Dynasty" (Alisande is nice), Jhessail, Ilistyl - there are a hundred nice names. Just pick a good'un.

Arilyn.
You could also peruse Kuje's NPCs file; it's prolly the single best collection of Realms names you'll find.
Just be careful not to pick something too far out there -- she'll be going to school eventually, and kids can be incredibly cruel when it comes to teasing each other about names and such.
And congratulations! Four, wow... I like kids, but that's a little too much for me. |

Congratulations Darkcrow.
My favourite female name in the published Realms so far would be Liriel. It just flows off the tongue. |

Congrats on the impending arrival.
My only recommend would be to give her a name that lends itself to a more easily said/used nickname in short. (i.e. Lyn for Arilyn, etc.)
But for some reason, I'm forced into recommending Laeral as a name.

Congratulations, on the baby and on winning your game
Certainly some FR names lend themselves better than others. Faenya (after Aerdrie Faenya) would work. Dragonbait would not There are plenty of normal names that are also FR characters, Olive is one that springs to mind instantly.
I'd second what Steven said about having an easily used/said nickname. At the end of the day it's only fair to think about 'what can I call my child so they won't have the *crap* beaten out of them in the playground?'
Mod edit: Tweaked for language.

I'd have to vote for either Arilyn or Liriel myself.
BTW, my ex-wife and I had the opposite deal when we had my daughter . . . I got to name the child if it was a boy. Unfortunately I tipped my hat about liking Lord Gunther Uth Wistan in DragonLance, and was preemtively vetoed. So my next choice was Tristan, after the (then) High King of the Moonshaes.
But in the end, we had a girl, and I'm sure she is thrilled that I wasn't the "responsible" parent for naming her. That, and she thinks Tristan is a character from Yugi-Oh . . . ::sigh:: |

I'd like to think that if the Lady K and I hadn't settled on Narnra... Laeral would've been a potential choice for an alternative.
As it happened though... we'd originally settled on "Alassra" before reading Elminster's Daughter.

Congratulations from the high north of Denmark...
I would recommend Robyn/Robin (Moonshae). It is a strong name with a classic beauty to it. Looking forward to hearing about the little one and the decision you are about to make. Congratulations again and good luck in the future. |

That reminds me of an article in Conquest (I think) back in the days when I used to play magic the gathering.
It had a series of 'which would you rather' questions to determine how much of a hardcore fan you were, just for fun. One of the questions was would you rather a) have the five magic symbols tattooed onto your face b) have your name changed by deed poll to Foratog Von Ass
Don't name her that though
it's obviously a boys name |

Hmm. Let's see. . . how to follow recommendations like Laeral, Robyn, Alustriel (shortened to Lustra, mind), Alassra, Jhessail, Alusair (I knew someone named Alusair once -- a guy, actually), and Narnra. . .
Vierna's got a ring to it.
I've always been partial to Dove.
Innovindil. 'Cuz you know. . .
Catherine -- to shorten to Cat, of Wyvernspur fame.
Not something like Malice. . . she can change her name to that during the high school rebellion phase.
Many congratulations on this gift.
Cheers |

Congratulations. You could always go with Qilue (Drow Chosen), Brianna (from Twilight Giants), Kehrsyn (the Alabaster Staff), or Thazienne (Sembia series). |

touché
Liriel seems a popular choice so far, I liked Isolde too (not just realms fantasy linkage there).
Erik had a good point mentioning Cat, any of the Alias vessels names could work (maybe not Alias). Cassandra, and Jade are both nice names. I'm sure some scribes know of some of the other Alias vessels I can't call to mind |

I agree. Qilue might be a bit out there (sounds somewhat Hawaiian I think), but the rest work just fine. |

My wife and I named our first daughter Liriel and our son Ryld. We are expecting our third and if it is a girl we are going to go with Danifae and we're not sure if it is a boy, but Valas is a possibility as is Tirumael. Congrats on number 4 and good luck picking a name. |

With reservations for my ability to write English phonetically, I've pronounced it LI-Ri-el. But if you want a proper answer you'd better ask Elaine, she should know one would think. |

You know Kajahase . . . that just reminds me of how amazed I am at how well many of our non-english native scribes use the english language, as opposed to how poorly many native-english using posters on many boards (not specifically here at Candlekeep) manage their native tongue.
Myself being a prime example when you consider the syntax of the above sentance would give Yoda whiplash. |

We pronounce it Leer-Ee-uhl. Just like cereal except with an L instead of a C. We pronounce Ryld just like build except with an R instead of a b at the beginning. Of course Elaine would be the definitive source on how to pronounce it. |
