So I was wondering if there is any sort of table that a DM can use to determine what sort of modifiers can apply to an encounter in Faerun. Or if people have any sort of table of their own, I haven't found one in published material.

Things like wild magic, dead magic zone, mystic maelstroms, sparks, fey mounds, boomshrooms, doom pits, cross roads and portals seem to dot Faerun. Some of these are area specific like fey mounds and boomshrooms but the rest can seemingly appear anywhere.

Its even hard to find definite locations of most these types in published material outside of portals and crossroads. I think I saw some wild and dead magic zones too.

If no one has a chart does anyone have opinions how often these sorts of things should occur? 2-5% of encounters was what I was thinking.

The party come to a town befallen by hysteria

Rogue: So what's in the general store?
DM: What are you looking for?
Rogue: Whatevers in the store.
DM: Like what?
Rogue: Everything.
DM: There is a lot of stuff.
Rogue: Is there a cart outside?
DM: (rolls) Yes.
Rogue: We'll take it all, we may need it for the greater good.

I think the concept of wild-/dead-magic areas is that basically you as the DM can toss 'em in wherever you want. To my understanding either of these two areas are relatively small, 30 feet in diameter or so.

To put that on a map you'd have to explode the scale immensely and these areas would still look like some flies relieved themselves there...

Mace's not so gentle gamer's journal My rants were harmless compared to this, beware!
