This thread is an effort of mine to list the Armed forces/Naval forces that the different kingdoms/Countries/Alliances/City-States have at their disposal.
Its not meant so much as a list of exact numbers of troops each location has, rather a general overview of different unit types, and a rough overall figure of the size of the army.
Any help would be appreciated:

To start:
Icewind Dale
The Ten Towns
Troop types:
Light Militia - The general population of the Ten Towns, usually armed with bows and spears and equipped with Leather Armour. Only equipped and called to fight in desperate circumstances, For example the events seen in the Icewind Dale Novels
City Guards - The 'policemen' of the Towns and Gatewardens etc. - Usually armed with a Sword, Shield and Crossbow/Longbow and equipped with Chain armour.
Numbers:
The Barbarians of the Tundra
Tribesmen - The peoples of the Tribes. Armed with Two handed Weapons and wearing Leather or no armour.
Numbers:
Approximately 200 - 2000 members per tribe. |

Try City of Splendors sourcebook for the City Guard/City Navy/Air force stuff for Waterdeep. Similarly, check the Silver Marches for Silverymoon's military forces and militant organizations, you may like to have a look at this: http://www.gemofthenorth.org/netbook/chapter3.html though not canon officially, it as good as one can get for now if there are no sourcebooks lying around.
For Cormyr, I think the candlekeep main site under Alaundo's library and under the traveler's notebook, check the "various unofficial lore" and look for Cormyr.
For both Cormyr and Waterdeep and Silver Marches, their armies are very conventional, with not much or not even a single of special military units like those one always see in RTS games and MageKnights. Even the elven military units of the realms are very much conventional and conventional in my book means: Swordsmen, spearmen, archers, cavalry, war mages and griffon/eagle/hippogriff/dragon riders(rare except for Evermeet and Impiltur as well as dragon cultists). Such units except for dragon riders are very common throughout the realms.
Halruaa have the unique and very expensive military unit known as the skyships serving as command ships and transports while the Sahuagin employ the Siege Crabs for their military defenses and maneuvres. The orcs have the heavy shock troops called Orc Berserkers otherwise their forces are very melee based: axemen, spearmen and archers and shamans. Impiltur have their dragon riders but not much these days since the Sammaster Fiasco.

All right, formats right?
For the Shadovar, they have specialized squads and total military size is at 3000 at least, this is what I can gleam from the Lords of Darkness and I did add some comphrehensions of mine. 1) First Expeditionary Division: More like a response division to external threats from outside the city borders, role may be to destroy external threats to the city or to conquer areas that are of strategic importance. 2) Royal Scouts: believed to be the military's reconnaisance and surveillance division, to recon and gather information on enemies. Numbers not known. 3) High Prince's Personal Guard: the elite bodyguards charged with Telamont's security and believed to be led by Prince Aglarel Tanthul. Numbers not known. 4) General Shelkar's Black Swords: Probably an elite highly trained division within the Shadovar military and more likely serving as shock troops for special or intense operations. The military weapons are more likely to be darkswords, darkspears, crossbows with dark glass bolts. The armor are said to be glassy black armor probably black crystal armor and no funny designs on it except for the Princes and high ranking officers. More details are in lords of Darkness.
Thayans: I think for the home military base units should be almost similar to their enclave military personnel. Gear, weapons and armor should be referenced in lords of Darkness. I think these should be their units for both enclaves and homeland: Thayan Wizards: Red Wizards more likely of different specializations from the eight schools and some powerful red wizards serve as de facto commanders of the enclaves.
Thayan Clerics: Mostly clerics of Kossuth, with other clerics of Shar, Bane, Loviatar but Kossuth clerics are more common. Serve the medical and religious needs of the faithful.
Thayan Knights: Bodyguards of VIPs/Red Wizards and enforcers for the Red Wizards. Masters of swordsmanship and fair masters of magic. They serve as squad leaders for battle and special guards for enclaves. No code of conduct for them unlike most knights.
Guardsmen: Common fighters that are common in other realms' militaries and armed with scale mail, scimitar, large shield & light crossbow. Serve as the guard of thayan enclaves and probably the backbone of Thay's military forces. |

There is Evermeet's aquatic and spelljamming navy. :) |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Do you recall where you found this info? I'm running a Halruaa based game right now. |

It was likely in the 3E Shining South. |

The counselors and kings trilogy did mentioned about the armies of Halruaa and Mulhorand and even showed the Halruaan skyships in action, slow moving warships that are easily "gunned" down with the appropriate spells and weapons. Otherwise the halruaan and mulhorandi armies are quite conventional. Evermeet novel did showed the dragon riders/eagle riders of Evermeet in action too. |
