Having read the thread over at paizo about Dungeon magazine looking for articles based in Faerun I saw Sammaster's name mentioned a few times. I get the feeling I'm missing something thats occurred lately in the Realms that involves him. Can anyone give me the low down?
Last I knew the Well of Dragons had been found and the Cult was attempt to build a base there. And I think I may have read that Tiamat's avatar in the Realms was slain and that the Cult was attempting to bring Sammaster back as Dracoliche using that body.
Is any of this right is there more I'm missing and if so what are the recent sources that I missed?

Well, it's not something you discover only at the end of book 2 or the like. I don't remember when his name is told, but for someone with a big knowledge of FR like you, it's pretty clear from the start.

| Hm . . . I'm kinda thinking that even the thread title "Sammaster Recently" is a bit of a spoiler, since it implies that there is a recently . . . though he has come back so many times, its not too much of a shock that a major event that has to do with the Cult of the Dragon would involve him. |

I was just wondering how Sammaster came back this last time? I knew he had been killed in 1285 DR by a group of paladins and Harpers but neither his phylactrey nor the Tome of Dragons was found.
The 2nd edition Cult of the Dragon module gave some theories on what might have happend to him one was he turned into a demiliche another was he was attempting to take a dragons body and become a dracoliche. I guess neither of these happened? |

| That would be a relatively easy explanation if he was killed but his phylactery never found. He reformed his lich body and went off and hid for a while. |

| He isnt specifically named until near the end of the book, but one of the minor characters near the beginning starts thinking its him when he (Gorstag) is introduced to 'The First Speaker'. |

I asked that very question from Richard Byers, the author of the Year of Rogue Dragons trilogy. In essence, he said he hadn't thought about the specific details of Sammaster's return - he's just back, like a comic book villain. |
