Sages, feel free to move this post. After hearing about the content of Mysteries of the Moonsea, I have decided to pick up the old 2e book on the Moonsea. I think... My question to the sages is, does 9474 cover most of the Moonsea, such as; Thentia and some of the places that are discussed in Year of Rogue Dragons? I would be grateful for your help in deciding if it would be worth buying in addition to mysteries of the Moonsea... Thank you Sages!

Thanks Dargoth,
I did not know that Volo had a guide to the Moonsea. All of these 2e sources were during my FR hiatus...

You're joking right?

VGttM remains unreleased and suppressed by Zhentarim agents.

I seem to recall that it does... If I wasn't at work, I'd take a look at my copy.

In the meantime, you can at least get an idea of what it contains by checking out this archive of FR stuff published by TSR.

Indeed. It's mentioned as part of the Candlekeep Collection, but it's not something TSR published. Steven Schend said:

quote:
And Wooly, those lists of Volo's prospective manuscripts (published, suppressed, or conjectured) came from my listing of what manuscripts were in Candlekeep. No, there's no plans to write any of them, nor were they ever in the planning in real-world ways. They were simply in-world expectations as to what the old boy would be up to and what might've occurred as a result...

The REFERENCE GUIDE covers the West Branch, North Coast, South Coast and the Moonsea Proper in that order.

The PLAYER'S GUIDE follows the same format but also has the "Miscellany" section.

To continue what the Sage has just said, the supplements provide some information about each of the major settlements of the Moonsea; e.g., in the Reference Guide you will find (rough page count given!):
Hillsfar - 6 pages, including map,
Zhentil Keep - 2 brief pages,
Citadel of the Raven - 3 pages,
Teshwave - 2 pages,
Yulash - 3 pages,
Voonlar - 3 pages,
Elventree - 3 pages,
Melvaunt - 5 pages including map,
Phlan - 6 pages including map,
Thentia - 5 pages including map,
Hulburg - 3 pages,
Sulasspryn - 3 pages,
The Sorcerer's Isle - 1 page,
Elmwood - 5 pages including map,
Mulmaster - 6 pages including map,
Ironfang Keep - 1 page,
The Moonsea itself - 4 pages featuring the Island of Maos, pirates, and the Bell in the Depths.

Similar distribution of material in the Player's Guide.

Hope that helps!

Martyn,

Thanks for the detail! Your listing has made me decide to go ahead and pick up a copy of this tome for my collection. Thanks to all the sages who gave me information, although I am still not sure of the whole Volo thing...

No. Just what I and Wooly referenced about the details Steven shared above and from the "Candlekeep Collection".

I'm not following (but am sure it's just me)... Where can I find this REFERENCE GUIDE? I am running a campaign and could really benefit from information on this area (in particular, Elmwood).

What Sage was saying is that sourcebook contains two books within it. One is the player's guide and one is the reference guide, aka, the dm's guide. If your copy doesn't have two books within it then you are missing one of them, obviously. :)

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

What Kuje said.

Note also, that the REFERENCE GUIDE is 64 pages. While the PLAYER'S GUIDE, is 32 pages. That should help you to determine what books you've got.
