One of my players asked me if the spellcasters in the party could create magical traps of their own, seeing how they themselves often ran into traps containing Lightning Bolts, Magic Missiles and what not. Plainly put, I had no idea.
Do you allow your players to do this, how, and are there any official rules?

Since only thieves can disable a trap, i allow only the thiesves to create traps. If a magic user want to create one, he must be heloed by a thief |

I totally agree with zemd on this one. A thief is obviously experienced and skilled in traps, if not making them then he would surely know SOMETHING about them as he would encounter then during his...ahem....profession.
A spellcaster would have very little to do with the actual trap itself, merely lending his spell to add the finishing touch. |

Thanks for your input. It seems a fair way of doing it and resembles some of what I had in mind.

Aren't there some rules for trap-making described in some book? |

How about the classical arrogant wizards in their secluded towers? Would they lower themselves to hire thieves to help them create traps beyond Symbols? How about entire magical rooms?

A lot of books deal about traps. The first i have in mind is Trap and Treachery... If i remember well, the stronghold builder's guidebook has a chapter about traps, but one one my friend borrowed it so i can't check.
As for your last remark dark lord... well, i'll search in my books, i don't want to give a wrong answer |
