Having played some Forgotten Realms modules way back when paper and pencil were used, and having progressed through Strategic Simulations, Inc. Goldbox series; i.e. Pool Of Radiance, Curse Of The Azure Bonds, Secret Of The Silver Blades, and Pools Of Darkness, it would be nice if us connoisseurs of fine RPG's could petition S.S.I. to involve themselves in creating more quality RPG's now that the world has use of the Windows XP Pro operating system.
One of S.S.I.'s products, Dark Queen Of Krynn (of the DragonLance series rather than Forgotten Realms) will run just fine on my Pentium 4 with Windows XP Pro, even though that operating system wasn't yet on Microsoft's drawing boards when the game first hit the market (in 1992, if I'm not mistaken). S.S.I. could easily corner the market with some new Forgotten Realms games, and put fraudulent wannabes like Atari out of business. (Please see my post about Atari's "Temple Of Elemtal Evil," an atrocity perpetrated on the unsuspecting PC gamer's market).

Unfortunately, SSI doesn't have the rights to produce Forgotten Realms or D&D games any more. And wasn't SSI bought over by another company? Aren't they owned by Mattel or something now?

i first was introduced to the game by my older brother... we were playing one of the games having to do with Phlan and then we would go down past zhentil keep and to this circle where we would be teleported to like the world of krynn or something maybe im not remembereing it clearly.... but i do remember using the arrow keys and how confusing it was to try and navigate a city.. hahah

And thank goodness. After Pool of Radiance 2's installer/uninstalled crippled windows to the point of needing a reinstallation I wouldn't want them producing any more Realms games either. :) |

Download a program called Dosbox. It's a dos emulator for Windows XP. Most DOS games will run great in it if you want to play the old games. ;)
Side note, Atari is just a brandname Infogrames uses for name recognition. Infogrames is a french company that no one ever heard of until they bought the electronics rights to ALL Hasbro properties when NWN was being produced and Interplay went out of business. |

BG1 will always have a special place in my heart as the first Realms game I played all the way through...and it's still the main one I use to introduce people to the Realms.
My first ever FR game was Eye of the Beholder 2....I still have that though I have no idea how it would run under all these new-fangled "Windows" programs we have nowadays.... |

As I recall... it can't, not without some tinkering to your OS first -- I had the same problem with the DOS-version of the MechWarrior II series.

You could simply set up your computer for dual-booting, and have the game installed on the older version of the OS... I once had DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11, as well as Windows XP, installed on the same machine! |

| Ah, memories... My first SSI game was Dark Sun: Shattered Lands, and my first Realms game was, Dungeon Hack (yeah, I know...), followed by Eye of the Beholder. I also started playing Menzoberranzan but never finished it. Anyone remember how bad the colour contrast in that game was? At times I could feel my retina burning! |

My first Forgotten Realms game was Unlimited Adventures. It was actually my first exposure to D&D and FR. The game was kind of like Neverwinter Nights where you could build your own module, only with no scripting options. I must say I was hooked immediately when I started playing and then designing with it on my parent's Mac Classic II (I think was the computer's model) that had about a 10 inch black and white screen.
