I have been following one of the suggestions in the FRCS, where Semmemon is trying to ingratiate himself to the forces of good by offering some stuff from his private notes in Darkhold to said forces. He has talked to the player's in my campaign, and they may do this. I am planning on having the PC Tunlar barbarian rally some Tunlar to raid a caravan, thus drawing out the Sky Mages, while the PCs sneak directly into Semmemon's tower to sack it. He will give them a key to bypass the wards the other Darkhold wizards have not been able to enter through.

I just wanted to get some thoughts on different aspects of this adventure. I definately want them to run into a few plate armored, greatsword wielding hill giants. I also wanted to include a ward that would detect alignment auras and repulse good, since the cleric will detect as lawful (even though he is lawful good, he is a cleric of Helm).

Any thoughts on what should happen during the raid? Guardians (I know at one time Ashemi was working on a flesh golem)? Twists when it comes to the Tunlar raid on the Zhent caravan?

Let me know what ideas you guys have, and thanks!

Knight Errant : A raid on dark hold sounds like an adventure classic about to happen.

My single question would be how dark is dark hold. I think I would theme this with a sort of Frankenstein’s lab feel. Assuming your party is up to CR7-10 encounters here are a few of the things I might try to work in. Brain Golem CR10 FF pg 85, the result of those flesh golem experiments. Arcane Ooze CR9 MM 3 pg 9 the dark holds dooms day weapon contained in a deep crypt. Perhaps some giant kin half flesh golems MM2 pg210 I think id shoot for a CR of about 8 for these. The arcane ooze is under cr, and it may be vary formidable to specific party configurations.

This could be a dumb question, but I am missing many 2nd edition sources. Is there a map for Darkhold or was it detailed anywhere?

The Darkhold idea is fairly good.

The Tunlar raid could be interesting, especially if the Tunlar see the sky mages coming, think their job is done, and exit the scene. The sky mages, seeing what is happening, some fly back to Darkhold and possibly catch the PCs exiting the place. Do the PCs have access to transportation magic? If not, how are they getting back to wherever they came from? They could be tracked if they are on foot.

I know little about Darkhold (as mentioned above) but would any other construct be there, like a gem golem? or maybe a small dragon?

Maybe a few mages are still sitting around Darkhold trying to get into Semmemon's chambers, and have a ward set to notify them when someone enters the place. They could then try to sneak in behind the party and get to the stuff. Or ambush them when they come out.

Have fun

There was a Darkhold book that I believe was includes in the old 2E Castles boxed set... I have the book, but not the boxed set, so I'm not entirely certain on that.

Yeah, I'm basing it on the layout from the Darkhold section of Castles. Atop the main keep are four towers, one of which was Semmemon and Ashemi's. Thats also where I got the part about Ashemi working on a flesh golem (which I would, for my campaign purposes, assume went "wild" in her absense). They also mention that they have Hill Giants warriors in iron plate armor made to look like Iron Golems there.

I've run a "raid" on Darkhold. The players went in disguised as Zhents and charmed a castle worker to guide them to Sem's old room. The reverse gravity trap I put in his private vault was classic. I still giggle about it to this day. I played up the massiveness of the inside of the structure as it was built originally by giants.

I was thinking that the PCs might fly straight to Semmemon's tower, over the battlments, thus the distraction for the sky mages watching the upper levels. I expect they will run into some giants outside, and whatever went amok inside.

Well it's populated currently by hundreds of warriors, commanders, wizards, support staff etc. I think subterfuge would be the way to go. It should be made clear that fighting ones way in should be met with overwhelming opposition.
