Some of the comments about the Dragon Compendium got me to thinking about the first quarter of 2006 and what products I am likely to buy when my wallet heals from Christmas.
The Spell Compendium from last month really hasn't seized me. While I normally love new spells and options for spellcasters, especially from the DM/evil opposing spellcaster point of view, the neutering of the spell names and the less than stellar way the source material was presented just didn't thrill me, and I realized that it was pretty easy to live without this one.
After looking at the art and Table of Contents from Races of the Dragon, I can honestly say that this one really doesn't get my attention either. While the Races books didn't really do much for me, this one especially doesn't give me much reason to bump it up on my list of buying.
Next month's Red Hand of Doom I'll likely pick up, and I hope my fellow scribes can get together with this one a flesh out some of the "Realmsian" areas that aren't presented as such in the book.
The Dragon Compendium: Volume One from Paizo last month is definately on my list though, because with so much varried stuff in it, I can find at least a few things that should be of interest.
Just wondering if anyone else has different views of what might be a good haul for FR fans in the near future (of course, this all assuming that Power of Faerun is on the buying list when it comes out).
Just noticed in March and April Complete Psionic and Tome of Magic: Pact, Shadow, and Truename Magic come out, so toward the end of the quarter I may be interesed in these two as well. Complete Psionic less so than than the Tome of Magic. This will all depend on how "different" these things are. I found that Magic of Incarnum was too involved to easily insert into my view of the Realms, but I am hoping this won't be the case with the Tome of Magic. Complete Psionic may be useful, though I do pretty well with just the amount of Psionic lore I have now (my PCs rarely want to play psions, so its mainly for villains)>

Agreed. I quite liked the first four, but this one seems to be getting worse and worse. Still, I'll pick it up, if only for the update to the draconian pantheon, the draconic grafts(I'm a sucker for grafts, even after what they did to them in Magic of Eberron), and for the kobold lore.

Hm, you're right-I wasn't looking at picking that up at all, but I should for solidarity's sake and because it is sort of a regional supplement(of really weird sorts).

Yep-I haven't had many good experiences with Paizo since they became Paizo, but this looks very delectable.

I end up using quite a bit of psionic content in my games, so Complete Psionic is on my must-pick-up list. As for the new Tome of Magic, I think it's a worthwhile purchase just for the shadow magic-I've never felt that converting all the 2e shadow mages into illusionists for 3e was that good a job, and a magic system for them is a great thing, especially if it's distinct enough from the system used for the Shadow Weave to present some interesting conflicts(a Shadow War amongst worshipers of Shar, anyone?). |

The funny thing is, I am sure that it will confuse some people, becuase if I understand the concept, obviously Weave users could still use shadow magic, and Shadow Weave users can use shadow magic, but this will likely be a point that causes no end of confusion. Dispite this, it makes perfect sense to me. Plus I am interested on having some more rules on Truenames beyond the comments in the Book of Exalted Deeds, since Truenames have been mentioned in Realms products since the begining, but the various editions have had sporadic support of the concept, at best.
Yes, the kobolds and the draconic grafts are actually what interested me as well, and the rest of the stuff seems, like the stuff in Magic of Incarnum, rather involved to introduce into a campaign "seemlessly." |

The Truename stuff definitely intrigues me... Races of Dragon I will have to buy to keep the collection up. And I plan on running Kianna through aforementioned mega-adventure. Just because I'm cruel. :)

Only Tome of Magic: Pact, Shadow, and Truename Magic looks interesting to me, because it'll help me round out the different varieties of magical styles to be found in the Realms (you'll recall Midnight -before she became a well known goddess- stole a list of Thayan Wizard Truenames).
The Psionics stuff I'll pick up only because there's a psionicist in my campaign as well. Otherwise pretty slim pickings until Power of Faerûn.

Never, ever read the game books too literally, or make such assumptions that what is omitted cannot be. Bad DM form, that.
