Greetings all

Can someone give me a hand and describe what the 'chain spell' feat in Complete Arcane does?

Thanks in advance.

"Any spell that specifies a single target and has a range greater than touch can be chained so as to affect that primary target normally, then arc to a number of secondary targets equal to your caster level (maximum 20). Each arc affects one secondary target chosen by you, all of which must be within 30 feet of the primary target, and none of which can be affected more than once. You can choose to affect fewer secondary targets than the maximum. If the chained spell deals damage, the secondary targets each take half as much damage as the primary target (rounded down) and can attempt Reflex saving throws for half damage (whether the spell allows the original target a save or not). For spells that don't deal damage, the save DCs against arcing effects are reduced by 4. For example, if a 10th level wizard normally casts cause fear at DC 14, a chained cause fear could target a goblin chieftain at DC 14 and up to ten of his nearby guards at DC 10. A chained spell uses up a spell slot three levels higher than the spell's actual level. "

From the web, but might be direct write up

"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

Chain Spell

A Chain Spell is treated as Spell 3 levels Higher

The secondary targets get a reflex save regardless of whether the orgional spell allow ones.

Chain spell can only be applied to spells that have a single target and have a range greater than touch (So you couldnt have a Chain Inflict seriou wounds spell)

How it works

Examples uses a Bob a 7th level wizard using a Chain Magic Missile (Which takes a 4th level spell slot)

Bob walks into a Room and runs into 7 orcs and Ogre whose leading them.

Bob casts his chain magic missile spell at the ogre he rolls 4d4+4 and deals 20 hps (he gets 4 missiles at 7th level)

5 of the orcs are within 30 feet of the ogre so the chain Magic missile arcs out to those 5 orcs doing a maxium damage of 10 however the orcs get a reflex save even though magic missile normally doesnt allow one. 3 of the orcs fail their reflex save and take 10 damage the other 2 pass and take 5 damage

Chain spell can also be applied to none damage dealing spells however the secondary targets get DC which is 4 less than normal

Did that help?

This is indeed an exact copy of the Complete Arcane writeup, except that the prerequisite line of: Any other metamagic feat is deleted.

I have no clue where Dargoth's getting his level +4 number-it isn't even true with the original version from Tome and Blood.

Is this the "ooh, new Realmslore" interesting or the "why is that green" kind of interesting?

Well, let's just say that I hope to write something that the "crunchy-philes" will think is great whilst simultaneously giving the "lore-junkies" something to get their teeth into. As it's a prospective DRAGON submission, I won't say more now - but stay tuned for more questions. Likely, there'll be lots! Just how do you 'rules lawyers' keep all that stuff straight in your head ... ??

Through pretty much the same system you use for lore-remember half of it and remember where to look the other half up.

The bad part comes in when you blank out(like I did on proxies in 3e a few days ago).

I knew he was up to something...

George's response when he found out he (Krashos Morueme) was only a 17th level sorcerer over at the WotC boards in a thread about Ched Nasad.

Yeah, but what I really want is "Epic Spellcasting" - I don't think I manage the pre-reqs. You see, I just found this bundle of notes on spell lore and all of a sudden I realise why the Simbul ... umm, well I digress. :)

I had a response prepared to that: "*another piece slides into place*" but thought better of it at the last moment. George, you're one wily man...
