Hi guys,

I'm just starting a new FR campaign and would like my character to speak undercommon, purely becuase I'd like to be able to communicate if we ever go into the underdark or encounter and deep gnomes/drow etc.

The problem is he's a fighter with a background of being a mercenary. I've searched for places where human mercenaries may have been employed in the underdark but can't seem to find anything on the subject or maybe there just isn't anything there to find. I'm aware that there are various univercities etc out there but it doesnt really fit in with my characters background.

I'm out of idea's, can anyone offer any guidence.

Hi Narv

What is the characters alignment?
How about that this character was a mercenary who was captured during a drow surface raid and taken back to an underdark city? He could have been made to work as a slave down there for many years, mingling with other races as slaves and overtime learnt to speak some undercommon in order to survive?

That's a good idea, Rad...

And Narv. Your character can be a good fighter, who want to test himself in a fight. Drow fight. Also he want to comunicate with his opponent, so he goes to a place, where he can learn some frases of Undercommon(for example Candlekeep)

<We have an Undercommon dictionary Alaundo, don't we?>

"Do not be afraid of greatness. Some achieve greatness, some are born great, and some have greatness thrust upon them..."

Rad, Ran, thanks for the replies

Alignment wise I was leaning towards Neutral, as I've not played a true neutral character before.

I quite like the slave thing, as I'm also thinking of having him come from the Dalelands and it would fit in quite nicely with CotSQ if we play that in the future. The only problem I see with it is the escape part, not many people ever make it back from being taken prisoner by Drow.

I like the Candlekeep idea, although I'd probably go for Silverymoon as thats in the area where whats left of the last party is. I'll have to discuss it with my DM, although my character isnt stupid I think he has 13 Int :)

Could have learned it in Skullport or maybe from an adventuring buddy who was there and learned it.

Some of the more unscrupulous merchant companies have dealings with the underdark races, maybe your fighter has served a stint as a guard for one of these and picked up some words of undercommon.

Or a former mercenary buddy might have been a dwarf who taught your fighter a few things about the underdark, including a smattering of the language used there.

Personally, I wouldn't go with too much knowledge of undercommon before the guy relly ventures out into the night below. That way you keep the roleplaying option open of having him learn more about the language and the denizens of the underdark.

I should have said this before, the charater is starting at 3rd lvl, my last character died at the end of our last adventure. The campaign is new as we were introducing some new players to AD&D and just wanted a generic game before we moved into a campaign setting and to keep some consistancy we've kept the same character except those that died. So he has kind of stepped out into the night already.

I've decided that he's going to be from Harrowdale, which gives me some options for Drow interaction and also some merchant guarding possibilities.

Thanks all for giving me some ideas.

You guard a merchant caravan down to the underdark, during your stay there you learn the language.

We live in a bleak world my friend, where heroes are few and shadows stalk us around every corner.
