Hi all,

I'm working on a plot that require a rival for Umberlee, and I cannot come up with anything. God, demon, devil, anything goes. Any ideas from the scribes and sages of Candlekeep?

I'm trying to bridge the published adventures Salvage Operation (see Dungeon 123), Tammeraut’s Fate (see Dungeon 106) and Curse of the Rusty Walrus (from the Wotc site). The gist is that this mad wizard was working to restore the Dead Three, and tried to draw power from other gods to do so, in this case Umberlee. The plot failed, but the result was two lost ships and a zombie island, and the adventures are ready to go.

Well, technically she is under Talos, and the two bicker a bit about WHERE storms are and who controls them when . . . Valkur is the only other diety that immediately springs to mind. Perhaps Sekolah or another non-human sea deity?

Brilliant. Sekolah is perfect. Thank you.

Valkur is her rival. :)

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Evil rivals: Panzuriel (krakens & evil sea creatures), Blibdoolpoolp (Kuo-toa, drowning & evil water creatures), Sekolah (sharks, sahuagin & evil sea creature), Talos (storms, destruction), Auril (winter storms), Sebek (crocodiles, river hazards)
Neutral rival: Istishia (elemental water), Akadi (winds & elemental air)
Good Rivals: Valkur (ships & sailors), Eadro (good sea creatures), Aerdrie Faenya (air, weather, rain), Deep Sashelas (sea-elves & oceans), Anhur (thunder & rain), Isis (weather, rivers & agriculture), Eldath (pools, springs, peace & peaceful water)

As Kuje suggested, Valkur is probably her major rival among sailors, although she has rivals (major & minor) across many other portfolios.

According to the novels, she is not on good terms with Deep Sashelas either due to the whole Evermeet thing.

Panzuriel - where exactly is information located on him? I had forgotten about him and he would be perfect for one of my games! Thanks!

Panzuriel is detailed in the 2e Monster Mythology. There's a few odd tidbits about the deity in the 2e PS supplement On Hallowed Ground as well.

Demihuman Deities also explores Panzuriel's relationship with Deep Sashelas in that deity's entry.

I beleive there is also a little blurb about Panzurial in Dragon #334, on page 63, in the Ecology of the Kraken article.

Wow. Thats a lot of choose from
I guess Valkur and Deep Sashelas is more appropriate for my group (it includes a human sailor and an elf) and because of the opposing alignments, or Sekolah (because of the BG II reference).

I'll hit the books to see what I can find. Thank you all.
